I don't know what's cool but I would dare suggest Japanese! Everyone I know has had such horrible experiences buying Americans..
But so far everyone I know that has bought a Takamine acoustic guitar has been very pleased the price and sound quality ratio are superb.

All terrible guitars I've had/played were Japanese. Good acoustic companies: Epiphone, Taylor, Washburn, Yamaha, Dean. Those are just a few good acoustic companies, but that doesn't mean you won't find one of a different brand that is better.

I guess it's different if you live in the States and considering how many brands are out there the possibilities are many.
I just remembed a guy I know who is a professional musician and he bought himself a 6000 $ USD guitar from one of the well known American brands (can't remember specific name atm) and basically what he got was a complete factory fluke, the neck was completely ruined the moment he got it and the fret work was incorrect to begin with..
But despite that I would personally recommend you try a Takamine, at least play it in a shop.
Also Yamaha is Japan based isn't it?

I think Dean (http://www.deanguitars.com/acoustics.htm) is a very nice guitar brand. I think their acoustics looks nice.

Yamaha is the exception with acoustic. They make all types of wonderful instruments. Electric guitars and bass guitars are the exceptions. They're not the best, no where close. Not for the money they're asking. However, acoustic and acoustic/electric from Yamaha seem to be pretty good.

Never actually played any Yamaha guitar/bass.. But yes I've heard they charge ''brand name''
Hell even my electric is Japanese!
