Ok, so my family is going through some financial troubles at the moment so I currently use my siblings laptops. I want to get my own computer and I was wondering, if I was on a budget around $500 should I get a laptop or a desktop. My friend made a good point that laptops you get more usually for less but he has a $1,200 laptop. I just don't want to get a cruddy computer because I have a low budget.

Typically, for $500, I see a desktop being the better option. Laptops generally cost more for the convenience. However, don't forget to check ads in the paper and stuff. I see great deals that my parents don't go for because of my grades. :P

I Would Go With A Laptop

depends....go with a laptop if you'd want to bring it with you when you travel...

but desktops are generally more ... powerful

but laptops are more expensive, as Aves said.

I'd say go for a desktop, if you can build it, I just priced out a computer for around 530 dollars with windows 7 and a six core processor.
Otherwise although I despise netbooks, I would say get a high end netbook instead of a low end laptop

For that price, go with the desktop. After my last laptop I would never go below $600 ever again on one, thing died after just over a year.

Get a 250-400 dollar laptop from bestbuy, with a warrantee of course
also, be careful what you download it, laptops are alot more vulnerable for virus'

Laptops are becoming more and more popular...I would go with a laptop. You can get a netbook for aroun $200. We got a really nice one for about $290 (and that was on with a 15" screen).

Laptops are not a lot more susceptible to viruses. All computers are equally susceptible.

Depends what you want to use it for, if you play games then a desktop might be more suitable, disadvantage is the space..if you dont have enough space for a desktop then a laptop would be more suitable.

I would say a laptop cause I love being able to bring it wherever I go, but a desktop might get you a better computer for less.

Here's for a desktop: http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopping/series_can.do;HHOJSID=PKb3NklM59bqGPG7BGPhs6nwFDjDD1pjTnhGNlHCGlpLZJQvSGnc!17480 06905?storeName=computer_store&landing=desktops&a1=Category&v1=Everyday+computing&jumpid=in_R329_prodexp/hhoslp/psg/desktops/Everyday_computing

I would say a small laptop, the school can get them at 400$ a piece

I am a desktop person due to the fact I am a power hungry person, so to have a laptop is a huge disadvantage to me because they're incapable of keeping up; especially the price of a laptop compared to a desktop. You can get more bang for your buck in a desktop, but everyone has their own preference of what they like best.

depends on what connection they are onI'm sorry but if I had a drink, I'd spit it out with laughter with what you just said there. Go back and research.

A laptop would be better you can take it places and there are some pretty decent laptops out there for low price.

I would go for a lap top too, just check at like best buy, staples and office max / depot too. Laps tops are just a bit better and you can take it with you. You should be able to get a good one in your price range.

I've always gotten laptops, but I'm pretty sure desktops last longer. If that makes any diff.
