View Full Version : Why is MineCraft so popular?

Rayquaza

Everyone I know has it and wants me to get it, except I don't see why I should buy a game in which i need to sculpt things out of block just for the fun of it. So why is it so popular and should I buy it?

Because of it's openness to creativity and sense of exploration. It's just fun.

1) It's fun.
2) It's cheap.
3) The regular updates and slew of mods available add replayability.

The "blocky pixelated" look is just the game's style... it's like that on purpose. xD

You're supposed to play the game, not stare at it and sigh about its lovely appearance. The blocky pixelated look is the style, and it succeeds in pulling it off.

Syvelocin

Retexture it. Simple. Then it doesn't look like pixel vomit. I use the Gerudoku texture pack personally, just switched to it a couple days ago.

People like to forget that gameplay is the key feature of a video game, not the graphics. If the gameplay sucks, ace graphics won't make up for it.

It's an indie game in Beta as well. What do you expect?

It's not infinite, but the world you have generated for you is eight times the surface area of the earth. More to explore than anyone with any life at all possibly could without their computer crashing first.

It's not. Programs such as Cartograph generate your whole world for you to view outside of MC. It's just way larger than you would ever imagine. The oddest thing I've found was a massive wall of Adminium oddly placed way away from everything else. I'm assuming it was an error when generating my world, nonetheless it had a small hole in it leading to an arctic biome, so I was happy.

Minecraft isn't so much a "game" as it is a creativity tool. You can build anything you want with it, but there are gameplay elements to it as well. The best comparison is to imagine an etch-a-sketch where every once in a while space invaders comes down and starts playing and you have to fight them off, and then go back to building to satisfy your creativity.

Games these days are surprisingly lacking in creativity, and thank goodness that now we have Minecraft. I was getting sick of "Go here, shoot that, pick up its weapon, now shoot that other thing, whoops you didn't do it exactly as I said so now you have to do it again."

Didn't think so.

Scooby Dooby Drew
April 21st, 2011, 03:55 PM
I can see how one might compare the two, but they are considerably different.
Many people are not good artists, and even if you draw massive monoliths that would take ages in Minecraft, there's a difference in that while drawing you aren't having to avoid monsters, or dig for materials.
This same difference applies to legos, along with the fact that even if you can build the same things, you can't explore from a 1st person point of view a lego house.
That being said, I love legos and Minecraft.

Drake14
April 21st, 2011, 07:39 PM
I guess so, I just mean theres no real point is there? I dont mind ppl like it I just dont get it :) mining and stuff but it only helps you to keep doing same thing, not any goal.

Well, the ultimate goal is to build things, the game goes as far as your imagination does.
It's a lot like the legos you mentioned in that respect, there's no point in playing with legos, all you do is build, but the joy is in the building of amazing structures.

The graphics aren't the point of the game. The level of creativity, the limitless opportunities, and the continuous updates make the game playable. Don't look at it and assume that just because it isn't pretty, it's not fun.

why have a nice new computer, then have a game that looks like it'd run on some 90s dinosaur?. (:

Look, get an HD texture pack if you don't like the style of the game.

Anyway, MineCraft is great because you can play it in so many different ways. The two extremes are the builders and the adventurers, but there are many colours in between. The feelings of completing a huge building project and of getting back to your house after narrowly escaping from zombies are both wonderful. MineCraft is an extremely engaging game, and, after a while of playing it, you won't even notice the graphics.

its simple graphics are what makes the game work. the idea of putting actual poly'd blocks ontop of each other wouldnt work and would take a lot more powerful computer.

Hatsune Miku
June 9th, 2011, 09:28 PM
yes. i have.

Then you obviously have no imagination. The point on Minecraft is to build. Make your own creation however you want it. Simple, or epic. You build a shelter to protect yourself at night. Why go for a hole in the dirt? Build an effin' castle. This is what Minecraft is. It's about building epic shit, and feeling proud of yourself afterwords and being able to say, "I made that shit right there."]

That, and going into other peoples servers and fucking everything up.

I don't see Mojang producing a final product this year. The game still has several bad loading bugs, in game bugs, and not enough replay opportunities. With the pistons mod coming standard, more newer features will likely be added. I doubt it'll stop so suddenly.

Commander Thor

Notch said he's not going to stop development on Minecraft, after the 'final' version is released, as he doesn't see the game ever being 'finished'. There's always going to be things that he wants to add.
Mojang just wants to put a product out that they can point to and say "There! THAT is Minecraft.", every other feature addon will be exactly that, an addon from then on.

Then there is the debate of whether or not Mojang will market those add-ons or give them free with the purchase of the game. Minecraft Beta is a purchase of the final game. Which could be considered Monjang's final product. No guarantee for future accessories after that.

True.
But as with most addons for many games, people are willing to pay for new features.
I highly doubt Mojang would charge for the addons though, they just don't seem like that kind of company to want MORE money out of people.

The game is incredibly fun and addictive. My only issue is that since it's an indie game, it;s very poorly programmed. It runs by stacking files upon files upon files because the game is ALWAYS generating. And it does a toll on your CPU.

The game is amazing. You have to play the paid version to really see how good it is. The plow res graphics add to the gameplay and the map is never ending (technically it does end, but to get to the "far lands" you would have to walk in one direction for 80 of our hours.) go to minecraftwiki.net.

You do realize that the game is so programmed that it houses Stacks upon stacks upon stacks upon stacks of files on your RAM drive. It just keeps generating and so the game just stacks files. Not to mention Minecraft doesn't operate without appropriate OpenGL. If you have a computer from the 90's with a framerate for that game that's higher than 5 FPS, I will pay you $400,000.
