I have to agree, on the other hand I personally think that this will be a way that new people will start takeing some different advice from others instead of thinking someone's better because of their Rep points. It has its pros and cons.

Most of the time, rep helps other people somewhat establish who the experienced or well-respected members are and who the idiots are. I think it's also good to give rep to those who make a very good post or take away rep from someone who makes a dumbass post. Also, funny how those who are all "this is a great idea" are the ones who have shit reps. :P

Oh well, not the end of the world. But still, it is a shame for those who have really, really high rep to have it all taken away from them. IF THIS IS EVEN ACTUALLY TRUE.

All I was saying is that a reputation system reflects the sort of posts people have made and as such, give people a reason to contribute to the forums instead of spam it (not saying that every person with negative rep is a spammer or that every person with high rep is not).

Not necessarily, I've seen plenty of members get bombarded with negative rep and continue to act like idiots for hundreds, if not thousands more posts.

It's not that the rep system does a lot of harm – although I have seen it push members off the site, particularly new ones – it's just that it's ineffective and, frankly, annoying. Besides, every time someone comes to the VT HQ asking why their rep is negative, we just tell them to ignore it (http://www.virtualteen.org/forums/showthread.php?t=94111) or that it's "not a big deal," rendering your entire 'incentive' idea a moot point.

I wouldn't really care if the rep system was reestablished, but I think that VT would be a much more peaceful place without it.
