Last night was a good night, nothing too major happened. I've been having a horrible few weeks and I gave in and cut my wrist the other night. But last night, like many other days in the past few years, I found myself wanting to go home and cut my wrists. When I want to cut, I always want to cut my wrist.
The question is, does anyone have any idea why cutting your wrists is always the first choice we usually have? Like, I've realized most people want to cut their wrists first. The feeling is so much different then cutting anywhere else.
Scientific reasons, personal reasons. Your choice. I just wanna know everyone elses reasons!

Erm I've just got my own reasons why I prefer my wrists or arm. For me it feels better? If that makes sense? It's easier to hide, bracelets are easier to explain than constant long sleeves (although now I have to do both). And I've always quite liked the risk, when I cut my wrists I usually cut down and I like the idea that if I cut too deep I could bleed out and die.
So idk if there are any actual scientific reasons, but those are mine.

i think i cut my wrists cos it is probs the quickest place to get to and the fact that it bleeds quite a lot :/ and for me seeing the blood makes me think that ive punished myself enough.

I mainly cut my arm rather than my wrist, but when I cut my wrist it gives me a much bigger adrenaline rush. As someone above says I guess it's the risk of it. I remember the first time I did it there. I was shaking but that just added to the excitement I guess?

Well, I don't know why people choose the wrists over other places, other than that most people who know about cutting, even future self-harmers, think of the emo stereotype with the wrist-cutting, etc.
The characteristics of it, though, is what I'll look at.
1. Sensitivity. The wrist is going to hurt much more than, say, your leg, or your arm. Same goes with your ankle and feet, etc. I could never really cut there because it stung so much, and I couldn't go as deep as I went on my arms and legs.
2. The physical location. Well, it's right there at a joint, you've got an artery that runs through your arm and your wrist to your hand. Hit a vein, put pressure on it and forget about it. Hit an artery, time for panicking and trip to the ER.
Why anyone would cut there, I don't know, other than the stereotype like I said. It freaks me out too much. I cut there about once, a couple minor ones. Never, ever did it again.

I have pretty much cut exclusively to my left wrist. It felt good the first time I did it and I don't want to cut anywhere else because my wrist is just a lot easier.

I've never cut on my wrist. It freaks me out tbh. Stuck to the top of my arm when cutting.
But yeah I cut on my hand because like some people said up there, it's easiest to reach and at that specific moment you don't care where it is you SH.

The blood vessel on your wrist is a major artery. Normally when people cut their wrist, it is for want of death. :/ Anyways, I think people cut their wrist because it bleeds alot, and it reaches their standard of pain.

I think like that too!
I think its because it feels better? I also think it could relate to before we knew about SH and the sterotype was if you cut its on the wrists. My counsellor instantly thought i cut my wrists and asked me if i wear long sleeved tops etc..?
I think that that the reference to self harm could be on the wrists because maybe thats what people know of most.. or maybe the first place they ever SH'ed. I don't know if that made any sense at all. But yeah thats what i think :)

Personally, I only cut my wrists when I was trying to end life. Its the danger, risk, adrenaline feeling I suppose.

i only cut my wrists wen im really bad, like wen i want to feel like im control, cuz i can cut shallowly n let the pain n watching the blood calm me down, but i also know i have the option of cutting just that little bit deeper n cutting the veins/arterys, i do it cuz it means im in control of what happens, but i rarely do it there anymore, too much hastle in the summer, but i think ppl choose their wrists cuz it means their in control of what will happen

All the reasons everyone else said, but I also have another reason.
I like the adrenaline rush when you're sat somewhere and you have cuts on your wrist that are hidden, but there's always that chance that your sleeves will roll up. Someone might see..

I definitely get what you mean. I always hope that someone will put the pieces together... but I also don't want them to as well. Embarrassingly, I'll go out of my way to get someone to notice, but I'll insist it's nothing if they do. I don't know why exactly though, maybe it is that adrenaline rush.

I used to cut my wrists, but moved to another place so it would be easier to hide.
For me, it was just because thats where I had heard most people cut. So I started there. After I had cut my wrists, it wasn't the same to do it anywhere else. So I just continued there for a while.
Yeah, that's my theory, lol.

It's the most conveniant spot. When I'm going crazy, I grab anything and just start hacking away. I get nervous aroun my wrist, so I do it on my arm more, but it's the thrill of the possibility of hitting an artery. Easy to hide too with bracelets.
Rith I'd qoute you, but my internet gives out everytime I try to qoute you. I agree with you guys though. I roll up my sleeves hoping someone notices, but hopng they don't. I wear skirts with no stockings or tights, I"ll do anything, and then hope and pray no one fins out, it's so contradictory, but the rush is great.
When I was little I used to stratch there, and dig my nails in there. It's also sensitive, and I love the pain, so. yeah.

I always used to cut my wrists because there was a bigger sense of accomplishment. Now I use my legs, since I was caught a year ago. Now it feels more like shame.

I do that too, but only around certain people. I would never do that around anyone whom I believed would epicly freak out. I feel ashamed afterwards. Like I'm a poser or something. Because I can't stand people who scratch themselves and run around screaming LOOK I CUT MYSELF. But I don't do THAT...Just. Contradict the whole hiding thing sometimes.

Cos its convenient. And cos it is quite a rush to cut so close to the artery, the hope you'll nick it or something.

i cut my arm near my wrist cuz im too scared to cut my wrist but the rush of cutting my arm is a lot bigger than cutting my hips and if i could get away with it/hide it id cut there more...

I cut my arms (not really only my wrist) mostly because it was pretty easy to hide because I never wore anything but long sleeves and sweatshirts...but after everyone kept figuring it out...I started using my legs instead.

I barely ever use my wrists. The times I have it was more-so just for the rush of possibly knowing I might of went to deep and I could end up dead. That always excited me, but the idea wasn't really intended on suicide. I just really got a huge thrill out of it. Fucking horrible though. The one on my wrist from the attempted suicide back in december is still pretty noticeable and I thought it'd be gone for now, but it might be there for a few more years.
Typically for me it's my stomach or upper arms above a t-shirt anyhow.

I agree with this. Scars on the wrist are a lot more noticeable, and last longer, than on anywhere else. So maybe thats a factor.

Wait - I never meant I want people to notice and I don't want the scar to last longer. Those are just things that have tend to happen. The thrill I was talking about was about the possibility of dying and seeing so much blood; nothing else.

I think that I'd go for the wrist is the potential to do more damage, personally I wanted to hurt myself because I thought I deserved it and it just felt good. I think the main reason though is because when you want to bleed the wrist is fairly easy to cut and bleeds quite a bit so its easier too.

Because I know it just takes some more pressure on the blade, and I could slip right through and end everything. It just makes me think more deeply, because I know that if I cut my wrist too far I wont have to think anymore, so I think more and my thoughts just rush, so when I cut my wrists I let alot of physical anger, tension and other emotions out.

for me, my wrists are the easiest place... i also do it on my wrists because i simply get more of a rush of pain than any where else... i think everyone does for many different reasons :) <3

With most peoe its easy quick painful and simple to cover up also there is the adrenali.e rush and the thought of dying makes it that much better like cut ur wrist and see what happens for me? All of the above plus I like seeing my own blood its weird but true.

Personal it's because the wrists are something i look at every day, easy for my eyes to wander from my hands to my wrists. It is also somewhat hidden to other people so I see it but others don't. I guess its just a reminder of shame that I can't forget.

I have never cut on my wrist, it has always been on my legs. One specifically but now have branches out to the other and lower. Anyway, I did escalate to burning and I did that on my arm (underside) because my arm was convenient. That's the only real reason. It was probably smart to do it there because I could check on it whenever, I didn't have to worry about germs because I had control over what was touching it opposed to on my legs like clothes, tables, people touching etc. Who would go out of their way to touch band-aids on my arm? No one. I didn't do it on my wrists at first just because I .. Don't know, but I kept doing it on my legs because they were so easy to hide. I never had to worry about them.
