So I got Minecraft yesterday after I came back from Dallas, and I was glad to discover it was pure sex in the form of a computer game. The game is really fun. However, I keep on making newb mistakes. Like forgetting where my shelter is located and going out at night without the proper monster raping attire. So can you give a Minecraft noobie some tips on not succumbing to the forces of EEEEVIIIIL?

If you're getting lost, pay close attention the sun & moon, as those will tell you direction and time. Alteratively, you can craft a compass/clock out of iron/gold & redstone. This is extra useful if you're underground alot.
Another thing I like to do, is put torches on the outside of any structures I build, that way, I can tell where my stuff is when it's dark out.
You can also craft signs, if you want, to point you to things you build/discover.

And for tips & tricks, and also recipies on how to craft things, the Minecraft Wiki is probably the best resource you can use: http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Minecraft_Wiki

A compass will point to your spawn point, and isn't very useful if you don't know your way from your spawn point to your base. Use torches as trail markers, since it's easy to make a lot of them.

You'll want to have a sword (made of stone until you find iron or diamond) and at least two cooked pork chops on you at all times, as well as a decent amount of torches.

Make a chest to leave your valuables/spares in when you die in case you're not able to recover your stuff.

For anything else, go to the Minecraft wiki up there ^.

Thanks, I now have a suitable shelter/mine and I made a clock. :D Not enough materials to make a compass though.

You can also make a bed out of three pieces of wool and three wooden planks. Sleeping in it will let you bypass night mode if you don't want to wait things out or think you're ill-equipped to deal with the monsters that spawn.

How can I make a pickaxe?
My friend said that I need sticks and iron for it, I crafted sticks but when I dig stone / Iron I don't get anything!

If you're using your hand to try to mine stone/iron, you won't get anything, you need a pickaxe first.
And you don't /need/ iron for a pick, you can use wood or stone first (And eventually diamond when you find it)
To make your first pick, you will first need a workbench (If you don't have one already). Craft one by making a 2x2 block of planks in the crafting area in your inventory.
Open the workbench by right clicking on it(After you've placed it by right clicking somewhere in the world), and you should see that you now have a 3x3 area to craft more complex things in.
Now to make the pick, place 3 planks along the top, and 2 sticks in the center column.
If you didn't understand that, the recipie for it is located here: http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Crafting#Tool_Recipes

I would also suggest crafting an axe for cutting down wood, and a shovel to make it easier to dig through dirt/sand/gravel.

I got the game a couple weeks ago, so I'm sort of new to it but I know a lot about it still.

I find the compass extremely useful, especially since my spawn point is right outside the middle area of my castle/kingdom. I get lost easily. I lost my very first shelter even. I just went out by boat to explore, wanting to find a tundra biome to build a city on between my work on my castle (the wall around it is taking fucking forever). Got horribly lost though, luckily I know there's no possible way I could completely get lost with my compass. Planning on walking back without the boat because I can't remember the route I took. It's just a bit of wood though.

I found this glitch that you might be interested in if you ever work with minecarts. I have a branch mine that goes down to layer four, right on top of the bed rock. Have tracks right down to the bottom. Place stone at the end, one space forward from the last step, and put two minecarts there, one against the stone and one behind it. Walk up a ways, put a cart down and ride it all the way down. If you ride down from high enough (you don't have to go all the way, just enough that when you ride down, you're at full speed before you hit the mine carts) the three carts will be joined, and will work like a booster. Just push off from the block you placed, and you'll zoom right up. They will NEVER slow down unless you put a unit of stone at the end of the track (I highly recommend this, sometimes when you get out the carts they will get buried in the earth and will disappear for a couple days). It's great for fast travel to other areas of your map without having to add large amounts of boosters next to your track.

So, me and a friend just bought a MN account, and it works on his netbook. But when I try to play on my Mac, it says 'user not premium' or 'login failed'

Any help is appreciated.

If you're having issues with the client, try using the web-based version, here: http://www.minecraft.net/game/
Also, it's doubful that you'll be able to play at the same time. (So either you, or your friend can play. But you can't both be on at the same time, using the same account)

And how can I find diamond :D?

Diamond is /very/ rare. It's commonly found between 1 & 10 blocks above bedrock (Though you can find it up to 16 block above bedrock).
To find bedrock, simply mine all the way down to the bottom, you'll know when you hit it, as you won't be able to mine it, at all.

Pray. Daily. It's a matter of 'if', not 'how'. That is to say it's very rare and you should refer to the exceedingly more useful post above this one.

Two successful mines, a moderate shelter, a sky garden, and a sky fortress within two hours. :D Woot woot!

Maybe it's just beginner's luck, but I found a decent amount of diamond and clay within an hour on one of my old files. The diamond was hanging around an enormous lava spring, so I built myself a portal to the Nether.

(I found the diamond by digging straight down and forward once I heard some creepy music. I didn't bother going down to bedrock level. Lucky me.)

Right now I'm trying to make an amazingly high tower made of smooth stone. I also got a pretty cool looking texture pack that's making me want to play right now, just to look at it.

Lucky you. I've spent days on end mining for diamond at times. Not that I'm much concerned with diamond in my new world just yet, but still.
I'm actually digging for lava as we speak. I've built my shelter around water and it's also near the sea, so if I can find lava I can replicate an infinite Obsidian source. But WHAR IS THE LAVA!?

I'm glad you have the patience for smooth stone. I just build everything out of Cobblestone. Fuck all that shit.<3 (:

I don't really like hunting for diamond because I've had multiple creeper-emerging-from-the-darkness encounters and I'm a big baby.

I used to, and I might use both, but I have a truckload of coal and it'll look neater so why not.

Lava + Water = Obsidian stone.

Make a stone pool and fill it with lava using buckets.
Then, create a second pool and fill it with water using the same method.
Next, create an empty pool.

Using the buckets, move water and lava into the third pool. They'll merge, and you'll have Obsidian.

---------As soon as I can find lava I'll show you what I mean. Unless you'd rather I did so soon, then in which case I'll reinstall my admin mods and just spawn the lava. xD

I know how obsidian is made. :P

Visual demonstration would be great. I know how it's done, but I'm wondering about the infinite part. You can make an infinite water spring, but I thought you couldn't do that with lava, so how would it work?

Build your shelter right at spawn point, then make a compass, also keep extra equipment in a chest in your shelter in case you loose it to lava or something, the compass will point you to the spawn point.

One of my noob mistakes was not building a shelter near my spawn. I made two of the far away from my spawn and I lost em both. Now, I'm experienced enough to make a house near my spawn and junk like that :D. Also found some diamond on my first day on one of my accounts  (or it might be lapiz lazuli, not sure yet).

From 2pm to 10:30pm!
So I set out to see how much I could accomplish within 8 hours.
I successfully built three large buildings. Defeated one Mob Spawner in one of three caverns discovered. Dug out two very successful mines and got to the Nether! Go me.
I didn't feel like screencapping all of it, but here are a few screenshots of my Bedrock mine.

My cute little infinite lava source:

Take advantage of the fact that there is not yet a mob that can break through blocks. Creepers need a line of sight, so if you run and quickly block the way, nothing can get you.

Why don't you just cast it? It's much faster if you're building something large out of obsidian...

Damn,i I dug a lot yet I cant find any gold, iron or any kind of other precious material, only stone :(

First thing you should be doing with your tunnel is getting down to the adminium layer, then counting up, so you know where the different materials are and you don't go off searching for diamond on level 25, or something.

Also, craft some doors. Place them from the outside as well.

The first Diablo game freaked me out more, but really... there's something about being down in my mine, right on top of the bedrock layer. I once ran out of torches down there. As I walk out to make some more, a creeper pops up out of no where and I'm freaking out because I don't want him to destroy a part of my mine, or worse, destroy some ore. That was... bleh.

Or when I was making an igloo in a new world, and I forgot to close it off and a skeleton was right by the wall shooting at me and I couldn't leave to get more snow...

I also have an insanely creepy, never-ending cave system that leads off of my little underground lair/obsidian factory. I gave up on exploring that one, closed it off for aesthetic purposes. It was just large, open cavern after large, open cavern of skeletons and spiders jumping on my head.
