JUDGING from his face, you could not possibly guess at the trauma of these past eight years. He has a child's eyes; a broad smile, filled out by the gaps between his teeth.
But this is the same boy, 16, who last week retaliated as a schoolyard bully punched at his face; who hurled the smaller boy into the ground, and in doing so became an internet phenomenon. He had been picked on since year two, he said, but he had finally cracked.
''Once I hit, um, high school, one person started it,'' he told Channel Nine last night. ''I had about eight friends. My eight friends ditched me that first year, and then the teasing started from there.''
Advertisement: Story continues below The teasing was fairly basic: other children calling him ''fatty'', telling him to lose weight, tripping him, slapping at the back of his head.
At one point, he was pelted with waterbombs. At another he was duct-taped to a pole. ''They put duct tape over my eyes first, dropped me down and then duct-taped me to a pole.''
At his worst, about a year ago, he said he contemplated suicide. ''I just started putting myself down, putting myself down to that level. And then all the crap just kept on piling on.''
Michael Carr-Gregg, an adolescent psychologist and founding member of the National Centre Against Bullying, called the interview reprehensible.
''All this is going to do is put more focus on this kid. I can't see this as a positive - he'll just be further victimised and his life made more difficult,'' Dr Carr-Gregg, who is also the Queensland government's adviser on bullying, said.
''Should this kid deteriorate and possibly harm himself, doesn't that sit squarely on the shoulders of Channel Nine?''
The boy, who this website has chosen not to name, said the support he received online had made him feel ''pretty good''. He did not regret lashing out, even after being suspended. ''All I wanted was it just to stop. So … I just did it.''
His father thought similarly. ''I don't condone the violence - it was a horrific thing to see, two boys fighting in a schoolyard and it ending like that. It is nothing to be proud of, but I'm glad that he stood up for himself.''

HULK SMASH!
On that note, i'm proud of what he did. After all he went through, he should have kept going. Kick the bully while hes down, and end it there. Otherwise they will come back for you, so just finish it when you get the chance.

Holy snap! That slam at 0:25 looked like it hurt. But that kid deserved it.

It looked as if that kid came up in between them so as to prevent this from escalating any further so he couldn't even if he tried. Besides, It seems to me that he has multiple bullies. Taking one down will only get the other bullies to be more careful when bulling him. Plus, you heard the psychologist, he said this is going to get worse.

I wonder if it's a bad thing that I laughed when he just threw that kid into the ground with little effort...
Anyway, I don't think he necessarily did the right thing by breaking a kid, but I guess action is better than no action. At least he stood up for himself.

And? Eitherway, he'd get in a lot of shit. Even if a teacher saw EXACTLY what happened, the little kid bullying the bigger kid, the bigger kid slamming the kid into the ground like that would get the bigger kid in more trouble.
Honestly, as shitty as it is, I'm glad he fought back. Enough is enough.

Self defence. He would most likely not get in more trouble.

Seen this before. Pretty sick. If it was me, I would have picked that ugly ass kid up over my head and then throw him on the ground and curb stomp him. I know what it's like to be bullied about your weight. Went through it A LOT when I was in elementary school.

I meant before the smackdown occurred. Unless the bully was someone else and shortstuff here just randomly started beating on his face.

That was painful. Even if the boy got into trouble for it, he had every reason why he had done it.

Nope. Self-defense isn't considered a defense in most schools.

I'm sorry, but I absolutely laughed my ass off at the kid after he was slammed on the ground. Ass holes like that need to be taught a lesson. God damn, I wish I would've had the balls of that kid years ago.

I don't think people should be cheering as much as they are for this. I mean did the bully deserve it? YES. But he could've gotten seriously hurt, and if this Casey kid thinks it's right to get back at all the bullies in this way, i mean it's basically responding to violence with more violence. It's a very touchy subject, and I just can't be all "Hurray! That bully should die, Good for you, kid! Next time, hit harder!" Bullying should just stop, but hopefully there are other ways to stop it.

Yet, so far, that's one of the only way they're listening.

How do you know he didn't try to deal with it in other ways first? Most schools don't do much about verbal/emotional bullying, and even if they do, most kids don't listen. Sometimes the only way to teach the bullys a lesson is to put them through hell. Also, look at the alternative, the kid had thoughts of suicide. Why should he punish himself for their mistakes? They're the ones who need to be hurt. Not him.
Wish i'd had the guts to do that.

Sorry to be Mr. Negative here, but why is it PERFECTLY acceptable for someone to bodyslam somebody that's a half foot and probably 170 lbs. smaller than you, because he's an alleged bully?
Assault is never the answer.

Dude, rewatch the video.
The smaller kid started it.
It is NOT assault.
Yeah, the bullied kid reacted bad.
Everyone has a breaking point. The bullied kid, hit his. I wonder why it was being videotaped anyway... Maybe it was a pre organized process. Have you been bullied, it caught on camera, then put on the internet? Trust me, its hell.
The tamest dog in the world can only take so many kicks before it bites the foot that kicked it. And humans are no different than animals.

I'm not saying he didn't try to deal with it in any other way. He probably did. I'm just saying, this isn't something that should be celebrated like this. Between suicide and this, definitely this, but it doesn't mean it's the right thing to do, just the less wrong thing to do. The best option of the two. And maybe there wasn't any other way out, but if people keep encouraging this response it might be misunderstood by other victims of bullies.
This time it was just fighting back on the spot, but the next time it could be a mass murder, and I'm not being melodramatic, this has happened before.

We all know what that's like. Think of it this way. People are celebrating it because he didn't choose to go on a murdering rampage.

Maybe, and thank God he didn't, but there aren't that many steps between the two. I mean, he did what he did, not because he reasoned that it would be best to send a message out to the world. He did it because he reacted, and between this reaction and murdering someone, there aren't that many steps (emotionally I mean). That's why it worries me.
but anyhow, it is nice that you see it that way.

Sorry to disagree Becka, but I'm just pleading my case. I rewatched the video, several times, in fact. But that does not change the definition of 'assault'.
An intentional or reckless act that causes another person to be subjected to immediate and unlawful violence
And, every time I watched the video, that's exactly what I saw. Like you said, the fact that this was being filmed (in addition to the people gathered around), leads me to think that this was planned out. Both of them knew exactly what they were getting into.
Bully or not, the smaller child could have easily been seriously injured, if not killed, with a maneuver like that. I understand that there is a 'rooting for the underdog' going on here, and I respect that. I'm glad the kid stuck up for himself. But it bothers me that 75% of the people on this thread seem to think he did NOTHING wrong.
