so today in the car I was blasting nicki minaj's song "did it on 'em", I LOVERS HER!
but anyway, the radio did that thing where the bad words fade so they technically aren't there but you know exactly what the say, even if you've never heard the song. like it goes "you ain't my son you my muthafo... step son"
and my mum was like "why do they have to swear in every nearly every single song?"
I personally never swear unless I'm angry, but I told her that it helps get a point across.. but I was just making something up.
so why do YOU think nearly every song has bad words in them?

Swear words are used for three reasons:

1. Filler
2. As part of a localized culture (take, for example, 'nigger' in hardcore rap)
3. As an 'emphasis word,' used to convey anger or shock

They're just words (http://www.virtualteen.org/forums/showthread.php?t=92035), I really don't see the problem with them. I'm pretty sure I have more "Parental Advisory" albums in my library than I do family-friendly ones, so I don't even notice when artists swear in their songs anymore.

The problem lies in that being a good singer does not make one a good writer. Not that I think Nicki Minaj is a good singer. Oh dear gods no, hah.

Maybe to just get a point across or to set the mood

I hardly care. It's hardly noticeable most - if not all - of the time to me. Swearing in music is no big deal. I actually support it. Though I don't like Minaj, he/she/it has every right to say what they/it wants. Taking something away only makes people want it more and more.

You know, I really don't care but I prefer songs with minimal 'bad words'. Also, songs with minimal drug or sexual references. I believe it makes the artist look very trashy. I also believe it makes the song have no true value. Music, it seems, has really gone down the tubes lately. It seems all they talk about is money, drugs, sex, and alcohol. I'm really disappointed with most current music.

OGOSH dont get me started on this argument
I pesonally could care less if there is cussing in songs
one of my fave songs are Platypus (i hate you) by green day (im a huge ass green day fan)
and it has shitloads of cussing
it is really apart of the art of the song and the mood as some people have said
it can have that affect that the artist is rageing
or get a point accross.
But thats my opinion

I don't like when it isn't needed. Pointless swearing I mean. If it fits, I couldn't care less if it's there. Content-wise, as long as it isn't shit like Ke$%(&$^@ha and whatever, pointless drug/alcohol/partying nonsense, song material doesn't change a thing if it's still decent music. I have artists with the most minimal swearing, and some twisted material with heavy swearing. Though it's not out of place swearing. Sometimes, if you're really mad or pissed off, just saying you're mad or pissed off isn't enough. You've got to say that you're fucking angry. "Bad words" are just that because you MAKE them that way. They're just words. They wouldn't be bad words if we didn't treat them as taboo.

Censorship in general though, I really hate it.

I have literally no modern favourite bands who's song writing is just as deep as money, drugs, sex, and alcohol. You're probably looking in the wrong places.

By current, you obviously mean mainstream. Swearing in lyrics is an art form plain and simple.

If swearwords are being used to provoke reaction in the listener, or to emphasise a point, just like in the written English language it can be used lyrically for great effect. If swearwords are being used to fill songs up with angry words (e.g. "motherfuckers fuck fuck fuck") then it is the artist's choice, but to me it just sounds shit and pointless.

Guys...what the fuck is "pointless swearing"?

2. As part of a localized culture (take, for example, 'nigger' in hardcore rap)

Lol what? "Nigga" isn't used as a swear word.

But, to most people, it's considered a swear word (or, as the OP phrased it, a "bad word").

Yeah, no one's gonna get back to me on this.

Context is key.

There's no such thing.

Context is key.

True. But still, any album released today using 'nigger' would automatically have a Parental Advisory sticker slapped on the cover. That's what 'nigger' is thought of in society – a 'sensitive' word. Even if it wasn't intended as a swear word, which it wasn't, since it's part of the culture that's developed in the projects, the rest of society will take it that way.

hmmmm..I think why a lot of songs have cuss words in them is because...

1. It's the "style" these days

2. It expresses emotions. I tried writing a few song (FAIL :/ ) and When I wrote one when I was really angry, the whole song was filled with profanities. It helped release all of my emotions though...
