This should be in the music section.
Greatest musician is a matter of perspective and one's preferred musician, I don't think you can say who is or was the greatest. Out of my favourites, I think The Middle East have produced the most brilliant pieces of music, but then again, my music selection isn't diverse.

Philip Glass is probably my favourite musician.

Miles Davis maybe. The man's pioneered and explored so many different styles of jazz and other genres as well. He's a god.

This is a question that could have a thousand answers by one person. Examples: Jimi Hendrix: You may not like his music but look what he did for guitar; The Beatles: Again maybe you don't like their music but their work in the studio revolutionized the recording industry.
Anyways, tough question so for all around great music by people who mastered their instruments I'd have to say Led Zeppelin and Rush. (but oh theres so much more....)

Lady Gaga
There are probably many people who would shout me down for saying that but honestly she is a truly great musician she writes all her own songs and if you have seen her do an acoustic set she is amazing at playing piano and singing, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lbz7cYgOzb8&feature=channel_video_title , but to be honest I think she is a legend in the making and will be around from many years to come.

Honestly, there are too many musicians from too many completely different genres for there to be one single "greatest artist".
Also, opinions.

...
That's the point. It's who is the best artist in your opinion.

Well, when someone uses the word 'greatest' and 'music' in the same sentence, to me it doesn't imply my opinion.
My favorite artist is Nirvana, but they're not the greatest artist, not at all.
See what I mean?

I'm hesitant with these threads because I feel that my music taste doesn't incorporate music that is exactly "the best." I don't listen to horrible music either, but my music taste is... a piece of work.
But whatever. My favourite musician just has to go to Emilie Autumn. Honestly, the most versatile of any artist I listen to, and has talent in every aspect of music, whether it's the lyrics, the vocals, the instrumentation, the production, performance, etc. Also, theatrics are always a plus in my book.
