Ok, so, I know that regardless of whether you walk, run, jog, or sprint a mile, you are burning the same amount of calories.

However, what I am not clear about is whether this is an inflexible rule that applies to all conditions or not. Does running up a fairly steep hill burn more calories than running on flat ground?

I believe so, its more work somehow. Must be, why else would treadmills provide an incline option?

Common sense would say so yeah, but then again it would also say that running burns more calories than walking. Not the case apparently.

Pardon the mis-information. Apparently what I said has been the consensus for many years and so I thought it was still true. However, after a quick google search, it appears not to be the case anymore.

But then again, the internet can say anything, so...

I guess in answer to your question I cannot cite where I got that information at this time.

the answer to this is simple myself being a runner and hiker i do this alot
running up hill helps the legs get conditioned to that certain terrain and burns many calories if you dont do it often if thats so then you lose weight all over by sweating
but if you run on flat ground you burn the same amount of calories about just more in your legs
