Hey I am wondering if it is just me or is nobody else who uses fire fox having a issue with the spell check. The spell check button apears on IE, and Advant, but not on ff. I assume this is just a conspirecy by kiros to force everybody to use advant:D, but i just wanted to know if anybody else was having the same problem?

Did you download the new Firefox? Spell check is built in. It's like Microsoft Word. It has a red line under the word if it's incorrect. Then when you right click it, it gives you a list of possible correct words. It's quiet handy.

i got the same new firefox, however if there are words that are correct, (for example D'Angelo <=== firefox thinks its an error, ignore it.

I'm pretty sure any other spell checker marks it wrong, too.

Well, do you want to know one of the good reasons I don't use Firefox? It's not compatible with 20%+ of the websites and scripts out there. Internet Explorer (and by inheritance, Avant Browser) on the other hand is completely compatible with 99.9% of the websites and scripts on the internet. The 0.1% that Internet Explorer cannot understand is made specifically for a different browser (such as Firefox or Opera) and is usually there because a Firefox/Opera lover wanted vengeance on those who openly admit Internet Explorer is not only more compatible, but now it's actually safer.
Just one good reason... There's many more. By the by, it's Avant, not Advant. Notice the spelling in the link: http://www.avantbrowser.com/ :P

Yes, it was only a matter of time before kiros decided to share his infinite wisdom:P. Yes i know avant is better, avant is faster, avant is total pwnzor compared to anything else, but I have a multiple monitor setup, and the program i use to allow me to switch my windows between screens and such is not compatible with avant, which is quite anying when i have 20+ windows open and am trying to move them around, plus the astetics of ff apeal to me more. I know your probably right on a technical level, but for me i need something that is easy for me to use. I would show some screen shots, but for some reason my print-scrn is being retarded and am getting a clipboard error when i try to past into paint, though it probly would work if I started using avant:D.

Heh, well if you're even getting an error with your clipboard, don't throw the blame on Avant Browser. Look into your own system and how you manage it. By the way, older versions of Avant Browser were not really compatible with BHOs, so you should probably try the most recent build of Avant Browser before giving up. Besides that, Avant Browser contains all of it's tabs in one window, so you don't have to move everything around. Firefox has some weird thing set up to where you have to do some weird key thing to use the tabs, because otherwise it uses multiple windows instead - which I find is very annoying (tabbed browsing is supposed to replace windowed browsing... get it right, Mozilla Development Team -_-)...

Not true actually. Its always in one window for me. Even when I click on links on MSN. Even if it does it for some reason, it's a simple change in editing your options menu.. get it right, Kiros -_-... :P
Firefox is more stable for my computer than avant. Avant freezes a lot but Firefox loads pages better even if its slightly slower. Avant loads fast but it loads incorrectly and time is usually spent the page fixing itself.

If you would like a screen shot, I'll show you how if I click on a link targeted as "_blank", then it will open a new Firefox browser. After 5 clicks, my start bar is crowed with Firefox jazz... Never again, I say! Even with their new 2.0.0.1, it still opens "_blank" targets incorrectly ;)
But ummm... Pages don't 'fix' themselves... What you might think it's messing up is actually just an image or table expanding as it's downloaded. Firefox uses the Gecko engine, which tries to account for all the images and tables before it renders anything. Avant Browser, inheriting properties from Internet Explorer, renders the pages as is and if an image width/height is not specified and it must be loaded, then it pops it in their after it's downloaded - that can sometimes affect the page's 'beauty' while loads, but it's more optimal and in both the memory and processor usage regions. :)

Ummm... Forrest, have you tried viewing in a non-compact style?
View >> Compact Style
Personally, I only like compact style if I'm on a laptop. However, it also makes for a really nice kiosk setup :)
But I'd like to bring up that nice little feature of Avant Browser - it keeps new pages in tabs - which is what I would expect from tabbed browsing. As you can see, in Forrest's demonstration, Firefox does not use tabs automatically. Instead, the orange (supposedly tabbed browsing) demon uses new windows by default. In Avant Browser, I can middle click any normal link to bring up a new tab, and if I run into a "_blank" link, then it will bring up a new tab (middle clicking does the same thing even on these links).
Anderson, the author of Avant Browser, designed the Compact Style in hopes that it would take off like a hit. Now, I know Avant Browser for having that nice option, but I don't use is much. Though like I said, it makes for a great kiosk browser with the maximum browsing experience :)

I've almost never had any problems with compatibility. Only thing off hand I can think of are ActiveX controls.
And, anyway, IE sucks. Avant is based off IE. If I want to use IE for something, I open it in Firefox, using the IETab extension. There's no point in using a different browser.
I never liked Avant. I can't remember exactly what I didn't like, besides the whole based on IE thing, so I'll reinstall it.
Hmm... Looks different now. Psh, they used the FF Icons on it.
Of course, it doesn't use Google for its search engine by default. I had to rig it to use it. Otherwise, it uses the crappy looking Avant search thingy, based on Yahoo.
The Menu bar is screwy. It's up in the upper right corner, and you don't seem to be able to move it to where it "Should be." I mean, I can move the entire bar, but that leaves it in the same right hand side.
Avant Browser contains all of it's tabs in one window, so you don't have to move everything around. Firefox has some weird thing set up to where you have to do some weird key thing to use the tabs, because otherwise it uses multiple windows instead - which I find is very annoying (tabbed browsing is supposed to replace windowed browsing... get it right, Mozilla Development Team -_-)...
Something else that is messed. Oddly, in Avant, there is no "Open in New Tab." It's grayed-out. Just "Open in New Window" remains. And, yet, it opens a new tab. Not a new window. Why would they do that? I like FF's way of doing this. I open new Tabs and Windows all the time. I like having seperate windows with Tabs within those windows, especially if it's something I'm trying to couple together, or whatever. I don't like having every last tab in the same window. The "Weird Key" is either pressing the scroll wheel button on the link, or holding control+clicking on the link to open it in a new tab. This is the same for Avant. Well... The Scroll click is. The Control Click doesn't work. IE7 uses the same thing FF does.
In order to open a new Window in Avant, I have to manually go down to the System Tray Icon and tell it to open a new browser. That brings up another issue. Why would you want a tray icon for it in the first place? And, when you open a new window, it creates another system tray icon. So, for example, if I had the same Windows of Avant open as I do FF right now, I would have 6 system tray icons for Avant. Which, is pointless.
The reason the Spell checker works in IE and Avant, is it appears to be using IESpell. Which, means you have to have that installed to use it, anyway. The Builtin FF Spell checker works just fine. It underlines all the works I spell incorrectly with a red squiggly line, just like Word does. Right click, and correct.
With that IE Tab Extension, I can use FF just like IE if I needed. Although, I've learned to Dispise IE, and anything built off it anyway.
FF 3 (Alpha, so I'm not using this as a huge point) displays the Acid2 test flawlessly. Avant, since it's based on IE6/7, fails. The Smilie looks like it's been slaughtered. But, I guess I can't blame Avant on that, because it's using IE.... Well...
Just from my experience, IE-based browsers are more prone to spyware, seeing that they have activex controls, and the such. The only other way I've gotten spyware with a browser is to actually download the program, and install it.
Also, when I look at the list of Avant windows (I have 6 open right now, just to compare with how I'm using FF) I cannot tell which is which. They all say "Avant Browser." There's no distinguishing title on any of them. When I do the same with FF or, even IE, I see "VirtualTeen Forums," or "Google."
The only real things I can think of right now, that I do like about Avant is that it is opening separate processes for each new "Window" I open, and Avant seems to use less RAM in some cases. Though, I have a GB of ram, so that's not an issue. The Separate processes aren't a huge issue, because if FF does crash, it reopens my last state anyway. So, having separate processes isn't a huge issue.
Avant, to me, just seems like Firefox, but using an IE Base. Sure, there's a few things that are better in Avant then in FF (Most of which, don't relate to the IE part), and there are a few things that are better in FF. I just don't see a point in using it. I could use IETab for FF if I ever wanted to use an IE window. Maybe if they fixed some of those issues I talked about above, I might like it better.

And, anyway, IE sucks. Avant is based off IE. If I want to use IE for something, I open it in Firefox, using the IETab extension. There's no point in using a different browser.
Just because Internet Explorer comes with an operating system doesn't mean it sucks. You have no backing or reason for saying that - besides spite. If you want to use IE for something, then use it? Why would you want to use a type of browser for something and then use another? That's ridiculous. There's no point in using a different browser. If you were given Internet Explorer, then use it - and by using Avant Browser, you'd also be using Internet Explorer - use one browser for goodness sake.
Of course, it doesn't use Google for its search engine by default. I had to rig it to use it. Otherwise, it uses the crappy looking Avant search thingy, based on Yahoo.
Anderson is one person... Not a big development team like Mozilla has. He can code everything that he needs, but he needs sponsors for his online hosts. This is most definitely why he has Yahoo! as the default search engine. Besides, Avant Browser gives you the options to change those, and if you install the Google Toolbar, then use it instead of Avant Browser's default search bar. Also, Avant Browser has a cool feature for searching; for quick searching, simply type in the abbreviation assigned to a search engine and then your search topic. For instance, if I wanted to use Google to search for "pie and noodles," I would type "g pie and noodles" into Avant Browser's address bar. You can change the configuration for (or add to) the quick searches in the options.
The Menu bar is screwy. It's up in the upper right corner, and you don't seem to be able to move it to where it "Should be." I mean, I can move the entire bar, but that leaves it in the same right hand side.
That's Avant Browser's signature Compact Style. As I said earlier, I don't use it except for a kiosk or when I have to have the maximum space for browsing but with access to all my options. Of course, there's also Full Screen and Full Desktop modes too. To change Avant Browser out of Compact Style, simply go to View >> Compact Style.
The Control Click doesn't work. IE7 uses the same thing FF does.
Unfortunately, the "Open in New Tab" and "Open in New Window" options come directly from Internet Explorer, not Avant Browser. While Internet Explorer 6 doesn't have tabs by default, it uses new windows. Internet Explorer 7 uses tabs, so you have that option. To prevent bugging, Avant Browser intercepts the "Open in New Tab" option that comes from Internet Explorer and disables it. And I do like the default action of opening in tabs, as that's what a tabbed browser was meant to do.
First of all, you have to do everything "manually" in any browser, even if it's just clicking. In Avant Browser, you can either use it's Tray Icon or use File >> New Avant Browser. Now the Tray Icon can easily be disabled if the user doesn't like it. Normally, though, tray icons are very convenient. Though the reason a new tray icon appears is because a new Avant Browser is created, not just a child window. Though you wouldn't have to worry about using new Avant Browsers because it actually uses the tabbing by default for new windows. Making new windows in a tabbed browser is pretty pointless. :)
FF 3 (Alpha, so I'm not using this as a huge point) displays the Acid2 test flawlessly. Avant, since it's based on IE6/7, fails. The Smilie looks like it's been slaughtered. But, I guess I can't blame Avant on that, because it's using IE.... Well...
Wow, that's a big accomplishment, seen as how Firefox 2.0.0.1 (which is incredibly recent) displays the Acid2 just as bad as Internet Explorer 6/7. Let's all rejoice! Mozilla has spent the past 4 years trying to pass the Acid2 test and they've finally done it! Well... Unofficially of course... Firefox 2 just came out a couple months ago, so it will be a long, long time before Firefox 3 becomes common knowledge, and then some time after that it might be released. No guarantees of course ;)
Just from my experience, IE-based browsers are more prone to spyware, seeing that they have activex controls, and the such. The only other way I've gotten spyware with a browser is to actually download the program, and install it.
Because of it's incomparable compatibility with everything out there, Internet Explorer not only can be prone to malicious software, but it can be better protected against it. My Norton Internet Security can keep tabs on everything downloaded before it's even rendered when I'm using Avant Browser (or Internet Explorer).
Yes, because it's a tabbed browser, not a windowed one. New Avant Browsers can be created, but as I stated before, they're not simply child windows, they're new Avant Browsers. The only time I would even think of using a new Avant Browser (when I have one already opened) is if someone else wants to browse the internet and I don't want their stuff to get mixed up with mine. This could also be solved by switching Windows accounts though.
Well, not only does Avant Browser usually use less RAM, it also starts up noticeably faster. Though one thing that I don't think you realize (at least when you made that post) is that new Avant Browsers are new browsers, not new windows. That's why it opens new processes - it's a whole new browser, not a child window. Another nice feature Avant Browser has is that it automatically saves each tab's website address. This means that if Avant Browser (or the operating system) crashes, Avant Browser will prompt you to see if you would like to open the saved links. I presume this is what Firefox does, except for the prompting. Avant Browser can also do the same thing when you're exiting. Simply use File >> 'Save All Opened Pages and Exit' and you'll be prompted to open the same pages the next time you open Avant Browser.
The way I see it, if you have Windows, then use what you're given, or (even better) use an extension to give you what you want. With Avant Browser, I never see the need in using Firefox or Opera, or even Internet Explorer (directly) anymore.
Well, I hope I explained in enough detail. If you have anymore points about it, please bring them up. :D
(Yes, this thread's kind of gotten off the main topic, but ... ya know...)
Oh boy... This reminds me of a projekt I never got around to... That Avant Browser guide. Ugh! >_< Meh... I have a few more days off from school, I'll try and compile it in that time.

Lols, well, I thought I'd inject something into this thread.
I tried Avant browser about 6 months ago and all it ever did was crash my pc, it blue screened it about every minute (seriously). Probs because my PC is kind of shit but hey, it got annoying lol, I'd be in the middle of some random battle with some CPs in HL:2 then bluhhh, blue screen. And when I tried to install it it would always decide to leave traces of itself in my registry which I had to go in and manualy delete because that just messed up any virus scans I did and also un-stabilised the registry a bit. But I might try it again seeing as I haven't tried it for 6 months but my PC has just had a huge fuck up (USB bandwidth went spaz, limited me to some stupidly small amount) so I don't want another one so soon lol.
Also I normaly try to use the same browsers over both my OSs (Mac and PC) and I know that FF just works on both of them, I've never had any problems. The only one I had was the fact that FF didn't like the WMP plug-in but I my neighbour messed bout with it and got it working. And I found it pretty easy to transfer bookmarks e.c.t. between FF and FF with it working first time.
But I know i shouldn't bear grudges on software, I'll try it again soon.
EDIT: I meant "shouldn't" opposed to "should"

I didn't say it sucked because it comes with the OS. I use it off and on at work anyway. They have FF too, but it depends on what building I'm at (Work at a School), so it depends on if the school has Fiber or T1, since the way our FF Profiles are set up, it brings them over the Network, so sometimes it's faster to open IE). I don't have a big problem with IE, for standard use. It doesn't bother me. I just wouldn't use it all the time. Like I said, I use FF (on my computer) the majority of the time. It's not like I'm constantly switching back and forth. The only real things I use IE for, (When I don't open it, just because I felt like it at the time) is for Windows updates. At least, in 99.99% of cases. I have no reason to otherwise. FF works just fine for pretty much anything I'd use it for.
I know if I use Avant I'm using IE. I made it clear I understood that. I wasn't bashing on Avant just because it's based on IE. That's one contributing factor, but not it all.
You can change the configuration for (or add to) the quick searches in the options.
Well, Again, it's using IE. So, it's not like they need a huge development team. That part is already done for him.
I know you can change the Default Search Engine. It's just more difficult then it needs to be.
I realize there's Google Toolbar. But, there's no need to install an add-on like that, if I could just go to the work to change the default search engine. I changed the default Web Search last night in Avant, when I wrote the original reply. But, of course, it'd be easier if you could select "Yahoo!," "Google," Altavista," etc instead of finding the url that has to be placed into the various fields (Such as Image search, Web Search, etc) like "http://www.google.com/search?q=%s"
Yes, you can do "g pie and noodles" to use Google to search for that. It actually works in this release. I know in a past build it didn't work for me. I'd never have a reason to use anything besides Google anyway, so that's not really an issue. At least, not for a normal web search.
Hmm... Defaulted into that Style. Never crossed my mind that it would be like that. Regular mode is definitely better.
I'm not saying opening in new tabs by default is bad. I like that too, but I do like being able to easily say "Open in New Window," as I do like to split up tabs between windows at times. Quite frequently, actually. I was just saying it would make more sense, in my mind, to leave "Open in New Tab" as the action, instead of saying "Open in New Window," as it actually DOES open in a new tab. Not a new window. A fairly minor thing.
With FF, it's not a huge issue for me, as I always use the Middle Scroll Wheel on my mouse to open in new tabs. Just click on a link with it, and it opens a new tab. It's like second nature, so it's not inconvenient at all.
Besides, you can change FF's default to open in New tabs. I know, at least, at one time in the past, it was a little round about way of changing the default, but that was fine. I don't know if they changed that in 2.0 or not. That's something that could be fixed.
Again, that's not how I use it. So, it makes it fairly inconvenient for me. I'm a bit more of a "Power User" then most people, I admit that, but for me, I prefer how FF does this. Some people will like Avant's way of doing it better. I realize that. I consistently work with 4+ FF Windows open. Usually with 5-6+ tabs in each open. Like, now, for example, I have 7 Windows with:
Window 1: 4 Tabs
Window 2: 5 Tabs
Window 3: 15 Tabs
Window 4 3 Tabs
Window 5 15 Tabs
Window 6: 2 Tabs
Window 7: 8 Tabs
Yes, I realize that's a bit much. The way I use it, I tend to leave a Window with what I'm doing at the time open for later use. Yes, I use bookmarks, but I prefer not to. I'm not on the best Internet Connection, so it makes more sense to leave Tabs open I will use within the next day or so again, then to close them and reopen them. Especially if it has a high content load. I leave my computer on all the time, so it doesn't bother me.
Obviously. :-). I have no idea why it took them so long. MS hasn't gotten around to complying with it either. Few actually have. Opera is one of the few fairly popular browsers that does, besides Safari and Konqueror.
Here's a Screen shot of Avant/IE7 on the Test:
For some reason, I Can't actually follow links to the test in Avant. It keeps forwarding itself to some 404 page, and then it says the page is blocked, or whatever. I have to actually paste the correct URL from FF into Avant. Oh well. Err, wait, that worked somewhat, but it forwards again. I ended up getting lucking using some round about way.

Granted, they both Suck, but you can't deny which one looks better. ;-)
Not that it really matters. They both Fail. :-)
Because of it's incomparable compatibility with everything out there, Internet Explorer not only can be prone to malicious software, but it can be better protected against it. My Norton Internet Security can keep tabs on everything downloaded before it's even rendered when I'm using Avant Browser (or Internet Explorer).
The way I see it, if you have Windows, then use what you're given, or (even better) use an extension to give you what you want. With Avant Browser, I never see the need in using Firefox or Opera, or even Internet Explorer (directly) anymore.
Just because it's provided in the OS doesn't mean it's the best. There are always alternatives, sometimes better. I'm not saying everything is better about FF. Just things that I care about. Besides, I like consistency across multiple platforms, as I do use both Windows an Linux quite a bit.
Well, I hope I explained in enough detail. If you have anymore points about it, please bring them up.
(Yes, this thread's kind of gotten off the main topic, but ... ya know...)
Technically, the thread is still on topic. It's just been expanded, greatly. :-)
But, then again, there's nothing wrong with that.
Oh boy... This reminds me of a projekt I never got around to... That Avant Browser guide. Ugh! >_< Meh... I have a few more days off from school, I'll try and compile it in that time.
That quote reminds me of the original topic of this Tread. Spell Checkers. ;-) Haha, Just messing with you. Eh.
Anyway, my original point was, even if I didn't do the best job of stating it, was that neither browser is perfect. I could go on all day picking out little details of both that I dislike. There are things in FF that I dislike. There are things in IE that I dislike. And, there are things in Avant I dislike. Avant is definately better, in my mind, then IE6. There's no question. The margin isn't as big over IE7, but there's still a lead. If I were to actually sit down and customize Avant, I would like it more, I know. I'm sure I could fix most of those issues I brought up. I was merely stating that a lot of ways it's configured by default, I dislike.
The school district I work at (As a techie) used 100% IE up until a year and a half ago. Some of them (About 3-4%) had FF installed as well. But, not a lot. Half the Schools are still running on Windows 98SE, and Half are on XP Professional. Firefox definately kicks the crap out of anything based on IE that runs under 98. Especially the way 98 handles resources, and whatnot. We transitioned a lot of People over to FF this year, although we left defaults at IE. Over this Christmas break, We're setting all defaults to FF district-wide, but IE will still work. And, Upgrading IE to 7 (For XP). Just doing that half freaks the staff out.
The way things are set up in FF, it's easier to customize by default then Avant, at least, that I've seen. If we, say, for example, tried to introduce that, Utter Chaos would erupt. Not that I'm against that, but still. From a standpoint of a relatively new user, I think FF would be better off for them. Especially over IE. I would never recommend sticking with IE. To a lesser extent something based off it, but still to an extent. Just from my past experience, I've dealt with so many spyware & virus infections, etc, that it's crazy. Don't take this as saying that it's impossible, or even difficult to reproduce these problems in FF. I'm definnately not saying that. It's just more difficult. So far, since I transitioned my sisters to using FF over IE, there haven't been nearly as many problems, as the majority of the time, you actually have to download a file and tell it to run in FF to cause the same problems that I've seen with IE and things installing on their own, or little popups coming up asking someone with no idea what's going on, if they want to install something. Because, if it stops the page from loading, and it looks like pressing "Yes" or "Install" might, just possibly, Maybe fix the problem, they'll do it. Most the things I have to contend with now, are my sisters downloading things like "Zwiggy Toolbar" or whatever it is, in EXE form and installing it. Which, they have done repeatedly. Whereas, in the past, with IE, it was so bad, that you could not visit any pages on the internet, period, without being imediately redirected to some advertizing site every last time. That took quite a while to find the culprit, as no antispyware or antivirus programs I have would find and remove it.
Anyway, I led the topic more astray. Sorry for that. But, Yeah. Point of this entire post: All Browsers suck in some form or another. Some Suck less. Each has their perks, but it's more fun to ramble aimlessly along about their quarks. I was just getting annoyed with all the hype about Avant, and how FF is utter crap, etc, that a lot of people here seem to have the attitude of.
They all suck in their own way. Don't flatter them so much. :-)
And, Kiros, if I remember correctly, you and me seem to like to get into long discussions like this with each other. Or, at least, I'm pretty sure I have with you before. I know I have with others here, when I do post. There's no such thing as too long of a post. But, there is such a thing as too sort of a post. (Err, well, maybe this is boarding on too long, but eh. Yeah, I'm done. Good night.).
EDIT: WTF. "You are limited to 10 Images in your post. You have 11." Psh.

I fail see the connection with the topic in any obscure way, but nevertheless, i agree. You can't say one browser is better than another overall. Because it is really a matter of personal preferences. Ya one browser may be faster, and another protect u against spy ware. But it is the users choice of which browser fits them best. *Attempt to lead this thread more off topic*This is different from the graphics card industry in which NIVIDIA PWNS ALL*Attempt to lead this thread more off topic*:P

Hmm... Defaulted into that Style. Never crossed my mind that it would be like that. Regular mode is definitely better.
<smile>
Obviously.
