So I'm thinking about buying a Nintendo DS. I'm not too fussed which version as long as its decently priced and stuff. Can someone tell me the difference between the DS, Lite and DSi and which one is the best to go for? Also some recommended games too :)

DS is the first one. Its clunky, not very bright(the screens) but its the cheapest. DS lite comes in a load of different colours, is bright, its easy to carry around, and it's the middle of the price points. DSI/DSI XL are the most expensive. They come in a few different colours, has a nice matte finish, has a fairly weak camera(direct facebook uploader), brightest screens, it can play music off an SD card, show images, and get onto the net through tighter security options than the DS/lite, and has a built in web browser(bit rubbish though) it's the most expensive though, especially the XL.
Great games are
Mario kart
Legend of zelda spirit tracks
Pokemon black/white
Super mario brothers
Chrono trigger
The world ends with you
Sonic rush
Pokemon heartgold
Probably a few more I cant recall.

Thanks Matt! I think I may actually go with the DS Lite seeing as it seems to be the perfect Medium and i can find ones for around £65 with games.

DS lite's are the best option now it seems. You can get them for the £30 - £40 if you shop around.

You could go for the DS Lite if you wish, but the 3DS comes out in Europe on the 25th and will play all your DS games plus all the new 3DS games with all the features of the DSi and more like a Virtual Console service and a bunch of stuff I can't think of all of them off the top of my head. But since it's the successor to the DS, the DS will eventually just go away and you'll be forced (Not literally) to buy a 3DS.

The 3DS may play the DS software but not as well, even on the original DS, DS software will play better than on the 3DS. The 3DS is also standing at £200, not really a price optional for someone who's just wanting "in on the action" not to mention the shoddy battery life of the 3DS which you'll be lucky to get more than 2 hours out of (coming from independent reviews.)
The DS lite is the perfect option for any newbie to the DS family.
Matt has got the majority of standout recommendations covered, but some I would also add is: Resident Evil: Deadly silence (it's the original RESI game) and of course Zelda: Phantom Hourglass! I may update this with recommendations later though.

The 3DS will play any DS game flawlessly except for a slightly longer loading time. (About 5 seconds.) I honestly don't know where you got that.

But I don't see the point of buying a system at the very end of it's lifespan. You'd just be dropping all this money, and then end up going "Hey, I'd like a 3DS" and spending all that extra money when you could just skip the initial payment and get everything you already could get on the current DS plus much more.

Yeah if you were to play on full 3D and maximum brightness all the time then you would suffer extremely low battery life, but generally if you play on 2D mode on the lowest brightness then you will obviously have a more significant battery life.

To be fair I only really want something to burn time with, I'm going to be travelling around a lot this year and i need something to keep me occupied :P I just looked up the DS and it had a lot of games I like, Mario bro's, Pokemon etc I just wanted some help with which version was cheapest but worth the money :P

Well then you could buy the current DS systems which already have a huge library to keep you occupied which is worth the money I guess. Or you could just put a bit more into a 3DS which still has that library but will add on more to it. So I guess it all ends up to your opinion as to what you want from a system.
Sorry for sparking a bit of a debate in your thread though. I just personally think a 3DS would be a better decision. D:

I managed to find a really cheap DSi with a game at a cash generator store in town on monday for £60, perfectly working too minus the camera but I wouldn't have used it anyway :) Thanks for all the replies!

Great review
POKEMON <3 <3
BUT you forgot
DSI/XL can not play GBA games, so if theres a GBA game you like which there are a few particular exclusive good ones then maybe you want to stick with the DS Lite.
Jus sayin.
