The area is flooded by tsunami in Iwaki, Fukushima Prefecture as Japan was struck by a magnitude 8.9 earthquake off its northeastern coast today. (The Associated Press/Kyodo News)
TOKYO -- Japan was struck by a magnitude 8.9 earthquake off its northeastern coast Friday, unleashing a 13-foot tsunami that washed away cars and tore away buildings along the coast near the epicenter. There were reports of injuries in Tokyo.
In various locations along Japan's coast, TV footage showed massive damage from the tsunami, with dozens of cars, boats and even buildings being carried along by waters. A large ship swept away by the tsunami rammed directly into a breakwater in Kesennuma city in Miyagi prefecture, according to footage on public broadcaster NHK.
Officials were trying to assess damage, injuries and deaths from the quake but had no immediate details.
The quake that struck at 2:46 p.m. was followed by a series of powerful aftershocks, including a 7.4-magnitude one about 30 minutes later. The U.S. Geological Survey upgraded the strength of the first quake to a magnitude 8.9, while Japan's meteorological agency measured it at 7.9.
The meteorological agency issued a tsunami warning for the entire Pacific coast of Japan. NHK was warning those near the coast to get to safer ground.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii said a tsunami warning was in effect for Japan, Russia, Marcus Island and the Northern Marianas. A tsunami watch has been issued for Guam, Taiwan, the Philippines, Indonesia and the U.S. state of Hawaii.
The quake struck at a depth of six miles, about 80 miles off the eastern coast, the agency said.
The area is 240 miles northeast of Tokyo.
In downtown Tokyo, large buildings shook violently and workers poured into the street for safety. TV footage showed a large building on fire and bellowing smoke in the Odaiba district of Tokyo.
In central Tokyo, trains were stopped and passengers walked along the tracks to platforms.
The ceiling in Kudan Kaikan, a large hall in Tokyo, collapsed, injuring an unknown number of people, NHK
said.
Footage on NHK from their Sendai office showed employees stumbling around and books and papers crashing from desks. It also showed a glass shelter at a bus stop in Tokyo completely smashed by the quake and a weeping woman nearby being comforted by another woman.
Several quakes had hit the same region in recent days, including a 7.3 magnitude one on Wednesday.
Thirty minutes after the quake, tall buildings were still swaying in Tokyo and mobile phone networks were not working. Japan's Coast Guard has set up task force and officials are standing by for emergency contingencies, Coast Guard official Yosuke Oi said.
"I'm afraid we'll soon find out about damages, since the quake was so strong," he said.
God, this is horrible. I saw on CNN a car trying to drive away from the water, but they didn't go fast enough. I started to cry so hard right there. I really hope everyone on VT who lives in any of the area's hit/ or that are goung to be hit are okay. I hope that your families are okay too.
I know I have a ton of family in one of the areas being hit, and I may even have my mother in one of those areas (long story, short I haven't had contact with my mother in 7 years, it's a complicated story) I regret ever making jokes about my mom to my friends, I'm sorry mom, and I hope you're okay. I love you so much, even though of all the things that happened between us, I hope your okay. We might not get along, but I just want you to be safe.

Japanese are the most hardened people against earthquakes and tsunamis in the world. I have seen footages about the tsunami and I hope they are fine.

You're the first person I've actually seen mention that.
Yeah, I was watching footage of all the stuff going on. Horrible stuff, but damn interesting when Tim Wilcox is the man doing the presenting on BBC.

What bothers me is that all day today people wouldn't stop confusing the Japanese with the Chinese and making Godzilla jokes and stuff... >_>

Thanks, the area where my family lives never got hit, so I that made me happy. All though, I woke up this morning and had to pack a bag because where I live got a tsunami warning. Two of my friends actually left the area we live in, because we live at sea level, so if there was a tsunami here...well. The frreway's were hectic, people were actually parking in the middle of the freeways, people were surfing (not so smart, especially because there was this one footage of about a dozen people surfing at this one beach, and if a waved had brought them to shore, they would have hit a wall of rocks.) One person actually got swept into the ocean taking to take pictures, and died. Our warning was lifted though.....
This whole thing is horrible though, and I saw some footage that I'll never get out of my head. All my prayers are out for the people in Japan.

Oh I read this quote on facebook, but it was scary how much of a coecidence this was...
9/11 Twin Towers Crash
1/11 Haiti Earthquake
3/11 Japan Earthquake
The day the world is supposed to 'end' 12/21/2012 ..... 1+2+2+1+2+0+1+2= 11
And thankyou, the area where my family lives never got hit, so they're fine now. :)

"Hold on. You have to slow down. You're losing it. You have to take a breath. Listen to yourself. You're connecting a computer bug I had with a computer bug you might have had and some religious hogwash. You want to find the number 216 in the world, you will be able to find it everywhere. 216 steps from a mere street corner to your front door. 216 seconds you spend riding on the elevator. When your mind becomes obsessed with anything, you will filter everything else out and find that thing everywhere. " (Pi, 1998)
That quote says allot when I see things like this. I do believe people what they want to believe even if it's absolutely insane. Just like the Jesus Grape or Mary on a tree. You give someone a close up of your arm and they'll show you where they see Jesus. It's really funny how the brain works.
In the movie, Pi, this math genius is obsessed with a number and trying to find out why it shows up everywhere. I think that movie can be very relevant to what everyone see's with putting numbers together in the world for certain events, such as 2012.
Also, a user that once went here wrote this (http://ripplemagne.weebly.com/1/archives/12-2010/1.html). Read it. I'm posting that because I'm not going to repeat the debate I've already posted on here a billion times and his is better written.

Oh, sorry I didn't men to sound religious (I'm not religious, and the sad fact is that I'm actually afraid to step foot into a church, non of my parents are really, but I am)
I found that on facebook, but I thought how weird it was such a coincidence. I really don't believe the world is going to end in 2012... My friends and I joke that it would be Palin's fault (sorry if your a Palin fan) but, I really don't. Even though at times I believe in it. I remember when I was about 11 or so, my dad and I got into a conversation about Nostradomos (I think I spelt his name wrong) and I wanted to read about him, so my dad got me 'Nostradomous for dummies' I remember reading what he said, and the whole time I was stunned that he predicted all of that. Sorry if I sounded sort of koo koo there....I'm sort of curios to see 11/11/11 though, and see if anything strange happens on that day, but that's just my curiosity :)

3/11 Japan Earthquake
The Haiti earthquake occurred on the twelfth of January, 2010. Anyone will twist anything to fit it into a distorted pattern, just as deadpie said. I wouldn't let it get to me.

You'd think that we would be considerate of the situation. Instead, in America, we get Facebook comments saying this is payback for Pearl Harbor (Which is BS and uncalled for in any situation), racist videos, and yes, a trolling religious fanatic video. No wonder why the world hates us.

I have looked at tons of video comments, pic comments, facebook updates, tons of comments on news articles, and I have NOT yet found one comment talking about pearl harbor, and NOT one racist comment. If there are any, they are just trolls looking for attention.

It is really mindblowing. e.g this video - http://bcove.me/w3oemh02
and everything that will happen this year will be with the number 11 at the end. So? :D that doesn't mean that we all will die

I hate when people look at this and scream "END OF THE WORLD!"
Actually, this is a common occurrence in Japan. Every 80 years I do believe, they have a really bad earthquake. They were actually about 20 years overdue for this one, so it's no surprise at all.
It's NOT the end of the world, it's simply just history repeating itself. Life will move on.

This is just random..
But some guy who predicted the 1989 World Series Earthquake within 4 days of it happening, predicts that the west coast of North America will get an eartquake within the next week. Alot of people think it'll be the bay area because well.. I don't really know. Both the San Andreas and Hayward Faults are overdue (one of them by 300 years I think) The guy also predicted the Chile Eartquake, New Zeland Earthquake, and Japan's earthquake.
Well...... my family is getting prepared for it, because if there is an earthquake, it'll be the big one.
I hope my loved ones will be okay if it does happen, one of my friends went down to Southern California with her family for spring break..so now I'm a little worried about her and her family.
it's sort of lame that I keep posting things like this........
