What is your opinion and why?

I've done this in RE. I would find deterance and societal protection the most important reasons. Since we have laws to prevent criminals from commiting crimes (otherwise people wouldn't bother doing any work or producing anything since there would be no garuntee that they would get paid for it leading to a very unproductive world), the punishments connected to them must deter the criminals by defintion. By preventing crime, you are giving a safer society (links to societal protection) where people will not have to worry (much) about being attacked or ripped off when going about daily business such as their work (which of course contribues to society - i.e. manufacturers and supermarkets).

I am personally weary of rehabilitation since I don't see it working with many criminals today and giving criminals secondary chances goes against the idea of protecting society and preventing crime, since you are giving criminals more chances to commit crime by letting them roam free.

I think differently whilst i appreciate that deterrence is important, I don't think it should be the main reason. Criminals know the law and the consequences if this doesn't put them off i don't see how watching other people get punished will make any difference. If they want to do the crime they will do the crime regardless.

Instead I would say Social Protection had to be the most important, punishments should aim to give maximum protection to society and individuals who could be victims in the future. We see too high figures concerning repeated offence. In light of this I would say reformation should be second most important as it is important to educate those who have committed a crime in what it was they did wrong, and also how and why they should change.

Protecting others. Uh, I should mention that the punishment of crime doesn't work as well unless you use swift punishment instead of having to make trials take forever. It should all be blunt when put out also.

Lol, jail is the worst place for rehabilitation unless it's a teenager. There's a statistic somewhere that says teenagers in juvenile are less likely to keep committing crime then offenders that go to jail.

Societal Protection - The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.

I would also say societal protection...reasons, agreeing with the others.

Societal protection. The rights of the individual cannot be violated by any other individual.

This also means that victimless crimes are bullshit, which I like.

Societal protection.

This is when a breach of UK Common Law happens though. 99% of statute law is total bullshit anyway.

I'd say deterrence - Well it works for major crimes such as theft, drug dealing, drunk driving. It puts people off as they carry heavy penalties so less people do it.

Societal protection

Keeping innocence safe should be the main priority.

Deterance leads to societal protection, so in a way they are linked.

I recently read a manga called death note its about this guy who obtains a book to kill people. U write the persons name in there and they will die of a heart attack or write a reason on how they die. But he only uses the book to kill criminals. And in the end it was the end of the world problems. So i agrre with no second chances for a criminal. Maybe crimials have to die. It could work and show the world that what rhey do is wrong. And maybe eventually the world will go better. Wars would decrease and criminals would hardly exisyt

It depends on the crime. With things like stealing or some drugs, it's deterrence but with sex crimes and murder, where the average joe wouldn't be as tempted to commit it, societal protection
