Ever since I was little, I've had odd toenails on my big toes. This came about after getting my foot trapped under a door and I dropped a hammer on the other one.
The nails have a sort of seam down the middle, which doesn't grow out over time. Sometimes fresh nail grows over the older nail, creating a sort of layer (Think tectonic plates).

Is there any way to sort this out without having the nails removed, or am I stuck with this forever?

I don't really know what this is exactly but sounds like when you damaged the nail bed when you were younger, it has permanently caused any new nail growth to be a bit messed up.

I think all your GP would do would be to offer to remove the nails. If this was done, you would obviously have your foot completely numbed up so it wouldn't be at all painful.

All the same, go and see your GP and ask them about it, they might be able to refer you to a chiropractor who could give you further advice.

I am thinking more of going to a podiatrist instead of a chiropractor

I have that problem only it's with the toe nail right next to the pinky toe (And my pinky toe nail is sort of a nub. My feet are odd). It's really uncomfortable when the second toe nail grows over because it creeps me out sometimes. All you can really do it keep cutting them and when they get long try to shape them down. I recommend going to a manicurist and having them give you a pedicure and pay special attention to the big nail. They can sand it down a little and try to flatten it out a bit or shape it. If not, head on down to that footy doctor and have it torn out at the quick! (I'm kidding). Get it removed :)

I would go to a foot professional and see what he recommends.
