View Full Version : Getting leg cramps during sleep?

This has happened to me on a few occasions, but has anyone been just laying there like half asleep, then you move your leg and you suddenly get really bad cramp in your lower leg? It just happens some nights and its really painful - but it goes away after about a minute. You can usually still feel it in the morning too, like some 'after aches'... I always drink a large glass of water before I go to sleep so I don't think I'm dehydrated in any way...

Yep, sounds like normal cramp dude.
Whilst you may not be dehydrated, you may be over-hydrated which can also lead to an inbalance in the salts and other electrolytes vital to the normal and pain-free functioning of your muscles. Try having maybe half a glass of water before you go to bed and see if this makes any difference.
Other things you might wish to consider would be the kind of diet you eat (too much / too little salt?) and how much you exercise (lack of exercise and thus use of muscles can lead to people getting cramps).

Leg cramps like that, in the night, are just an annoying fact of life for many people.

It has happened to me twice before and I found that it was the way my foot was positioned in my sleep, either strained up or down. And when I moved my foot my calf would cramp badly.

This is normal. To relieve the pain, you may want to try walking around a little bit to excersize that muscle. I agree, maybe you should drink less water before bed as well. If both of these suggestions do not work, you can try to help relieve the pain by putting a microwaved sack of rice (raw, not cooked) on the area. Hope I helped. ~Caitlin
