It's normal to feel bad, or like you could have done something. There's really nothing you could have done, to live things have to eventually die. Just be happy for the time you have with them, make the best of it. You can of course not let them run around the neighborhood(like don't even let them outside without them being on a leash if you want to be super protective) but other than not letting them run out in the road and keeping poisonous things 200% out of their reach, IE putting medicine on a high shelf AND in a closet or something so they can't knock it down, there's not much you can do. I'm sorry for your loss, it's always terrible losing anything, from a pet rat to a best friend.

Losing a pet can be extremely difficult and in some respects can be just as bad as losing a family member. I lost my dog a little while ago, I'd had her since before I was born and it just didn't feel right her not being here when i got home from school, not giving her her evening walks or feeding her before and after school. It was so difficult i thought i would never get over it. You've got to understand though that pets don't live as long as people, and sooner or later the inevitable is going to happen however much we may not want it to. Moving on is an important stage to do and although it might seem horrible to think of it may do you some good.
When Rizzler died I had no plans of getting another dog because it felt like a betrayal to her memory. But as soon as i set my eyes on the puppy my parents took me to see I completely feel in love with him and ever since its been so much easier to live with.
I've always wanted to work with Animals since i was little because in a way animals have always been in my life and have always been there for me through the hard times. I'd like to give something back to them for doing that. I've just been accepted into a college to start my training to become a vet. Honestly its not stupid to become upset over the loss of an animal, they play a big part in our lives and hey, they've even helped to shape my future. It'll get better, it always does. If you need to talk you can pm or email me at the address in my signature. I hope this helps.

I've lost a pet rabbit and one of my cats, of course I cried myself to sleep for endless days. But I was younger and that's all I could do really.
Loosing pets never gets easier for me.
I have a dog right now who's about 7 years old, we're practically growing up together, which is why even the thought of loosing her brings me to tears, I cannot fathom the devastation I will feel the day fate rears it's ugly head upon us.
Eventually things smooth out and life goes back to normal in a sense, but I doubt I will be able to calm myself when the day happens.
Pets are family.

but i have a sort of obsession with my pets, and scottie (the one i talked about) he and i have been together for like, 7-8 years, half my life, and watching him die is sad, and to know i could have helped him makes me feel like i have a debt to pay him, even typing this im crying....

I can see what you mean, my pets are my other best friends.
I do not know you or Scottie or his condition, but even if you could have helped him that would just push the inevitable back. Which, I think, would make the event more difficult to cope with if it were me. Knowing that we would have been in the same position again.
