It depends on who you ask. Some 'hard-core' Catholics frowm upon it, but most that I know don't really pay attention to anything that goes with this.
It all depends on what you choose to believe I guess..

I'm Christian and dont regard it as a sin. People get confused by "The Sin of Onan", but if you read the story of Onan its nothing to do with masturbation, his sin of spilling his seed on the ground was because he pulled out early during sex.

Nowhere in the Bible does it say that it is a sin. However, some people still consider it one, but I wouldn't worry.

suza23
February 22nd, 2011, 12:55 AM
The only reason people consider it a sin is the "wasting" of the seed. Not so much the pleasuring yourself part.

ilo2011

I do.
And I am catholic.
Nothing in the Bible says it is.
But it is frowned upon.
I'm not hard-core Catholic tho.

Catholics used to use the story of the seed of Onan in the old testament to put across the message that masturbating is the wasting of sperm ( which is regarded as a sin) but the story isn't about masturbating it's about contraception more-so it was just something the church tried to enforce. I wouldn't think it's a sin.
I'm Protestant btw and yes I sometimes j/o

No. There are zero references to such an idea in the Holy Scriptures. It is only a sin to become a slave of a given habit - that is, giving up important things for it.

Well im not Catholic i belong to another Christian faith, but according to Catholic rules, yes masterbation is a sin, actualy and sexual action NOT intended to result in children is a sin. But i personaly belive its perfictly natural.

Chris1993

Yea according to the Church every little sperm has the chance to become a kid. So wasting sperm is, according to the Church, killing babies. Now I am a Catholic and I don't believe that it is a sin to do sexual things. But it all depends upon you to make that decision on whether or not it is.

I'm Christian and dont regard it as a sin. People get confused by "The Sin of Onan", but if you read the story of Onan its nothing to do with masturbation, his sin of spilling his seed on the ground was because he pulled out early during sex.

And furthermore, in my interpretation, this story is not saying that pulling out early during sex, or any other form of contraception, is a sin (a Catholic belief). It is more that he had a duty under god to provide a child for his dead brothers wife and refused to carry out that duty.

There are a couple of views often associated with Catholicism, although certainly not all Catholics.

1. Every sperm is sacred - check out the Monty Python song of that name. The belief here is that we should not decide whether a particular ejaculation results in pregnancy but let god decide, i.e. the only permissible place to ejaculate is in a womans vagina with no contraception.

2. Sexual pleasure is the preserve of marriage.

The problem with these two view is they fly against human nature and the practical limits on resources for bringing up children,

Ask yourself these questions:

1. Why would god give teenagers a very high sex drive and then make it a sin to satisfy that?
2. Why would god insist we have so many children that there is not enough food on the earth to feed them and they die of starvation?

I suggest instead:

1. Masturbation is better than promiscuity.
2. Contraception is better than teenage pregnancy.
3. Once you've found a loving partner to marry, then's the time to think about children.

Yes, it is considered a sin. Please, please, please don't let your religion stop you from doing this. That is the silliest thing that anybody can ever do. Masturbation is a completely natural thing. If Christianity is the One Right, and True Path (of which I'm very doubtful given the number of religions throughout society) and masturbation is a mortal sin and everybody who does it goes to whatever you consider 'hell', then I promise you, Heaven isn't going to be very populated.

Comming from a kid who used to consider becoming a preist, I can honestly say that masturbation is not a sin for which one must confess. The catholic church likes to unfairly demonize things, and while I am still very religious, I do it quite frequently. Everybody masturbates. everybody. Your 70 year old grandpa and grandma still do it. They're not burning in hell for eternity.
To answer your question, Yes it is a sin. Just like in the great state of New York a $25 fine can be given for public flirting. The rule is there, but NOBODY CARES. Trust me, I've even brought up the akward question to the bishop of my diocises, and he laughed and said "my dear boy, with so many gosples preaching forgiveness, heaven would be quite empty indeed if it were truly a sin."

Exactly this.

Then Judah said to Onan, “Sleep with your brother’s wife and fulfill your duty to her as a brother-in-law to raise up offspring for your brother.” But Onan knew that the child would not be his; so whenever he slept with his brother’s wife, he spilled his semen on the ground to keep from providing offspring for his brother. What he did was wicked in the LORD’s sight; so the LORD put him to death also. (Gen. 38:8-10)

There is no mention of the masturbation in the Bible... :yeah:

actually take it from a catholic that knows: the Church teaches from Scripture and Tradition. the Tradition is the Catechism. It says this:

"2352 By masturbation is to be understood the deliberate stimulation of the genital organs in order to derive sexual pleasure. "Both the Magisterium of the Church, in the course of a constant tradition, and the moral sense of the faithful have been in no doubt and have firmly maintained that masturbation is an intrinsically and gravely disordered action." "The deliberate use of the sexual faculty, for whatever reason, outside of marriage is essentially contrary to its purpose." For here sexual pleasure is sought outside of "the sexual relationship which is demanded by the moral order and in which the total meaning of mutual self-giving and human procreation in the context of true love is achieved."

To form an equitable judgment about the subjects' moral responsibility and to guide pastoral action, one must take into account the affective immaturity, force of acquired habit, conditions of anxiety or other psychological or social factors that lessen, if not even reduce to a minimum, moral culpability."

This fancy talk in essence says masturbation is contrary to God's intention for the holy act of sex ( which is two fold procreative and unifying) masturbation is neither, thus it is a sin and a grave sin a mortal sin one in needing of confession.

It is true that no where in the bible does it explicitly say anything about masturbation per se but it implicitly says it all over the new testament

I'm catholic and I totally get what you're saying. Here's how I see it:

God is this amazing being that we humans cannot even come close to begin to understand. Some of His messages are too great for our human languages to understand. Be the best person you can be; God forgives and loves us all. It's not like he's gonna let a murderer in Heaven and someone who masturbates in Hell. God is love; so spread the love(and God) to yourelf and if you choose, your partner. :)
Hope this helps!

According to the Bible, everything seems to be a sin. I'm Catholic btw, and I jack off too. I also use condoms, so according to my religion, I'm going to Hell. But the Catholic Church won't be the one supporting a baby if I get a girl knocked up, I will, so that's why I use condoms.

I grew up as a christian, and I was pretty hard on myself when I was young, don't let yourself feel guilty for masturbating. Not masturbating probably makes you sin more than masturbating. you sexual tension builds and builds, and your thinking all kinds of crazy things. Don't get yourself crazy over it. It is a way of releasing sexual tension and clearing your mind. As with everything too much of anything is not good for you.

I'm catholic and i masturbate....and it's not a sin, it's natural!

Animals do it, humans have always done it and i highly expect the Pope has beaten off atleast a few times so no i don't think its a sin. God gave us free will, the free will to decide what is moral on our own terms, it is always your own choice.
