70% of the time, when I'm talking about Steampunk music, whoever I'm talking to doesn't understand what I'm talking about at all. Another 20% understand steampunk as far as cosplay and fashion. And then about 10%, maybe less, understand what I'm talking about as far as music.
Steampunk, unlike many musical genres, is based in opinion whether it's part of the genre or not. Though commonly accepted steampunk groups are Abney Park, Rasputina, etc. Though some other bands, such as The Dresden Dolls, have been considered steampunk as well (other than their song Coin-Operated Boy, I really don't agree, but they have a huge influence on steampunk bands).
