2 questions about anal foreplay

Basically, me and my girlfriend were having sex a little while ago, which we don't get a lot of chances to do, so we were getting really in to it and maybe a little carried away. I had my hand under her to hold her up and basically without going into too much detail I ended up fingering her 'butthole'. I have no idea how it happened or why I did it, because the idea still disgusts me, but she seemed to really enjoy it. Then when we got more comfortable and I went to do it again she seemed to realize what was going on and freaked out a little. I felt soo bad :(

So basically my two questions are 1) For girls, has anyone ever done this to you and how did it feel emotionally? Did you think any less of your partner? And Guys vice versa.
2) what are the risks of going from this to vaginal fingering? Because I'm scared I might have done it and I feel like a total idiot so I just want to make sure I didn't make her sick or anything :(

It's all safe if you know what you're doing - discuss it with her sensibly to see if she enjoys it, if not don't continue. I have never been fingered in the anus, or for that matter fingered myself in the anus, however if it floats your boat then go for it. Anal sex has far more risks than vaginal due to the sensitive and delicate tissue in the anus that can be quite alien for those inexperienced.
