Need

In a number of older threads, generally threads about people wanting sort of cool expensive toys/stuff, I've seen some of the wiser members here saying they don't 'need' any of that. I figure when you say generally 'need' it refers to things you need to survive.

I thought about this a little, and i think it isn't quite right to say that if you don't need something you shouldn't have it - you don't need internet, you don't need water to 'come' to you house, you don't even really need a house, to name a few basic things. But i think our wants, whatever they may be are important, if people didn't want things that are better or just cool there wouldn't be progress. All the "useless toys" we have might contribute indirectly to some great ideas that might change the world. Art is also the same, we don't directly need it, but it inspires people to explore and do great things.

For most these things don't bring anything more then enjoyment, but for a few people something special might happen.

Maybe this is just justifying selfish pleasures... I'm not completely sure... looking forward to see opinions.

Ermmm... this isn't really a debate. Of course you don't need those things, but enjoyment and thus happiness in humans' lives is probably the most important aspect to fulfill, bar survival.
