View Full Version : i5 760 won't go past 3.0

Dunno if any of you are smart enough here but.. Had my i5 760 for a few months now, at first I could OC it to 3.45GHz with no problem in p95 for hours on end. Now all of a sudden I can't even push 3.0... It immediately kills p95 with "illegal sumout" I.E. unstable. Voltage won't help me get it any further, temps 50C MAX in p95.
WTF?

Overclocking can greatly shorten the life of you processor. At least your still going above Intel's recommended speed of 2.8GHz. This sounds like your processor is slowly dieing.

2 months≠slow
Please tell me you're joking and not that misinformed.

It's quite possible that you damaged the processor by setting the clock /that/ high. Core i5s really weren't made to be set that high.
It's also possible that it's not getting enough power, check the power supply with a voltmeter.

^ Good idea. I'll have to pick one up from a friend, I don't have one on hand.

http://www.overclock.net/intel-cpus/858385-i5-760-oc-club.html 4.8GHz... I don't know about you but that's like.. 2x the frequency I had it at and his is obviously still running(top guy on list).

I never said that it wasn't possible to have a stable clock set that high, if you read, I said that they weren't designed to be set to a clock that high, I never said it wasn't possible.
It /IS/ possible, however unlikely, that you damaged the processor by overclocking it. However, it's more likely it's not getting enough power, due to a bad PSU, or something wrong with the MOBO.

the silicone in your CPU sounds degraded, as xbox said the i5 is NEVER meant to go that high on air. 2.8 is intels maximum for air, the guy your looking at on that forum had it under liquid nitrogen for prolonged spells. hence keeping the temperate below -150.
the 760 is a poor CPU anyway, why not buy a i7 920? so much more fun

I LOVE how you said it's liquid nitro. Look at the damn proof dude, it's water cooling lolololol
"chilled water cooling... TPower i55.
had my rad in direct air path of a window a/c unit. temps during benching stayed around 23c at load..."
and on the same thread "De Cossatot 4.219Ghz 1.364v"
using AIR. AIR. AIR.
It'd be nice if a mod could close this since I'm not getting any help.

lololol the guy your talking has had that chip on a 24 hour burn on LN2 lolololol
read some of his other post before you flame.
how about you provide us with some PI calcs and voltage tests, then we may be able to help.
