Look up random words in the dictionary. Memorize what they mean.
Get a thesaurus. Look up a common word, then study the more advanced words. So you learn to say residence, instead of house. Traumatized, instead of shocked. You get it.

Read books, lots of books! Try to choose some which you feel you might struggle with a bit as this should be an indication that there will be news words / general structures that you might not have seen before.

The best way of improving your standard of essay writing is to consider your format and how you are actually setting it out, less so than vocabulary really. Essays are very easy to pass if you remember the key rule, along with learning the required info. PEA paragraphs.
Point - a sentence or two, providing what your point for the paragraph will be, you could argue any point given that you provide good evidence and analysis for it.
Evidence - provide information, preferably a statistic or a quotation to support your point. Put in a footnote at the bottom of the page to say where the evidence comes from.
Analysis - explain how your evidence supports your point, and relate it back to the question of the essay. This should make up for at least half of your paragraph.
Easy formula, good luck! :D

The best way to improve vocabulary is to just simple read. Not books like The hungry Caterpillar obviously. Even though it's an amazing book. Gothic genre books have great vocabulary in actually.
