I love writing stories and poems. I also hate Notepad.
i run Windows 7.
I just found Wordpad on here, and it's pretty nice. It could be better, I liked Microsoft Word Processor alot better.
But I was wondering if there were any other FREE writing programs?

There's Writer which is part of Open Office. It's got pretty much the look & feel of MS Office 2003.
I can't think of any others that would be good for just writing off the top of my head.
A good place to look though, would be the open-source sites, such as SourceForge.net, Code.Google.com, or CodePlex.com

How about Google Docs?
that's on the internet, unfortunately (inconvenient when the internet is down) but you don't have to worry about emailing yourself docs.

the only part about wordpad I don't like is that it lacks a spellcheck.
try cnet, and see if they have an old office download. I've been meaning to look for awhile

There's also 'Office Live'. Which is a slimmed down Microsoft Office, available online, for free. http://office.live.com/
Always forget about it.

For general-purpose editing tasks, OpenOffice (or LibreOffice) are the way to go - full MS-Office-like suite, but free as speech and beer.
If you are writing stories, you definitely may want to try LyX (http://www.lyx.org/). Discovered it recently - perfect when writing long texts without having to worry about the correctness of the formatting. That's the one I use nowadays for all my story writing.
