Finger flexibility and guitar

I've been trying to learn to play guitar, but for a lot of chords my fingers just can't stretch enough to reach the right way for some reason. The only way i can reach the frets right now is in some pretty uncomfortable looking(and feeling) positions, like sort of sideways.

So what do you think, should i just do it whichever way i can, or is this gonna hurt my playing orr.. ya' know, my fingers :) eventually?

Practice makes perfect. You will learn how to grasp, and position your fingers on the fretboard the more you practice. Just for right now, try your best to position your fingers. If you have to, move the guitar upright a little bit.

Run pentatonic or chromatic scales to build finger strength, such as a harmonic minor scale. Also, do things such as this, because this will really help.
