I use the 'new posts' a lot, and if you don't check in for a few days you can get a lot of 'spam' that you aren't interested in.
Could there be a way of stopping a thread showing up in new posts (eg for threads i'm not interested in / games / surveys i've answered or whatever)?

Not quite the same thing but you can choose to exclude whole subforums if there are areas that you arent interested in. You do that from the Edit Options (http://www.virtualteen.org/forums/profile.php?do=editoptions) page under User CP.

i think a checkbox and "mark as read" system would be great for new posts. Just check the ones you dont want to see and click a button. :P

You guys do know the admins only seem like gods? Its all about what options are available in vbulletin and learning how to use them to best advantage.

no. individual threads. but not having to read them. Kindof like mass mod, but with a checklist and marking the checked read. Like email...

I don't know if there's really a mod for this. But I like the idea

You can only exclude forums from new posts not individual threads.

there's an [-]app[/-] mod for that ;)
but yes, i don't like that either.
EDIT: excluding subforums does not help, they still appear in the new posts
