I don't really think I have anything on my computer to protect it from viruses..

Are there any free ones I can get for my laptop that actually work?

I have windows 7.

Not the best, but it's free.

If you don't mind trials try Kaspersky (http://www.kaspersky.co.uk/trials)
There are three different types there you can try each for 60 days.

When i was at staples about to buy a security software,
One of the tech guys said to use Windows Security Essentials. He said that he thinks it's better then norton plus, it's free!
So you just google it and make sure your on the Microsoft website and download :) free for life

I've used AVG, Avira, and Avast. I used Avast for the longest, and it never gave me any problems, stopped many a threat. I'm on a different computer for a while, so I decided to try out AVG, and it hasn't given me any problems yet.

The only problem with Avira is that it pops up an ad every time you boot up your computer.

And I honestly would never trust a Microsoft product to protect a Microsoft product. I just don't see things going well.

That's where you're wrong!

Microsoft Security Essentials (http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/) is a lightweight, highly-rated antivirus program. While I don't use it on my computer, its in-the-background setup and, as I said, lightweightness would probably make it the best for laptops since it won't use as much power.

Well I use avast! on all my computers, so you should try it.
I haven't tried MSE yet but according to what other people are saying it's a nice one too.

I use MSE as my security suite.
It's lightweight, powerful, and one of the most important things of all, you don't notice it until you want to.
The ONLY time you'll ever see it's screens is when you first install & configure it, and when it detects something. The rest of the time you can forget you even have it.

Can I get a link somewhere to one of these so I know I'm using a legit virus protection download?

This was in my first post, but:

Seriously, MSE is the simplest and best for laptops.

I use Avira. Its very nice and doesnt have ads, security checks, and all of that all the time. Just a lot of updates

Norton is just plain horrible and you have to pay for it.
AVG I would also stay away from. It works, but I dont like the way it is set up.

Avira is good. Norton sucks.

Avira did nothing. Cramped some hundred viruses. I think Avast is the best. It even saved my friend's computer(from viruses)!

This. Although I'm not entitled for this, one of the consequences of letting some asshole install a bad copy of windows to your rig.

I wouldn't really advise Kaspersky, even the free one.
It is never able to find true viruses and it always comes up with things like "Virus in your game folder!" things like that or sometimes say "Wikipedia is risky. Want to go out now?"

Well its worked perfectly for me for about 3-4 years now. Never had a problem with it unlike most i've tried.

Don't know. For me Nod32 is the best.
Keeps updating itself without you know it. I've never had any problems with it.

A friendly warning: If you love your computer, don't buy Norton, just an advice

Oh no, my dad made that mistake a few years ago, we got Norton, my brother decided to look up porn and before we knew it our computer was a pile of shit.

Norton itself is a virus to any computer. Once you install it, you can never completely uninstall it. Norton itself is full of spywares, malwares and other stuff and it only warns you, doesn't do cleaning at all.

Anti- Virus companies deal with hackers. They hack, and people buy anti viruses and then they split up the earnings, but it eventually turns out that Norton is also hacked, then Norton says "Buy you gotta update me dude!" and they pay extra money for it, etc...

I'm telling ya, Nod32..
