I think it is a case of synchronising your hand movements to the spurts of cum. When masturbating this doesn't really serve any purpose but during sex the equivalent would be to synchronise thrusts with spurts so the spurts all happen when the penis is furthest into the vagina meaning the sperm have less far to swim and less chance of dribbling back out. I suspect the same reflex to synchronise in this way is shared between masturbation and sex,
