Is there a proper way to debate?

Nope.

No. Just both sides argue.

Well then, I think the golden rule is to have facts ready to back up your opinions, and be prepared to change your opinion. That way you'll learn something and never 'lose' a debate.

Ok I don't like the idea that debates are something you can lose.
And I don't like the way there is different sides.
I like what you said about having facts ready to back up your opinions, and being prepared to change your opinion.

How about a bit more thought about if anyone is actually right?

Is there a proper way to debate?

Eventually one of the sides will have a nerd rage, causing the thread to be locked.
In real life, cops will lock YOU in case of a fight

Nope, the threads usually fall in an immediate arrest.
In real life, it is called "I don't know you -- you don't know me"

Doesn't sound very proper.

Techincally, there's such thing as professional debate, but it's all pretentious bullshit that's designed to turn the simple act of arguing into some sort of inane 'sport'.

I'm a member of my school's debate team, but I can't stand the way they do it. There are plenty of times when you can't even debate what you actually care about, there's a fucking organization that chooses the rules for you. You can't always debate the side that you agree with. "Professional debate" is a load of bullshit in my opinion, it tries to turn the art of conversation into some rigid, boring, emotionless activity devoid of its intentional purpose— to express a personal opinion.

It's not boring. And it's more of an informative thing. You can't pick sides because nothing would ever work out. And you can't pick topics because it's a national thing. So you can't have a million topics.

Well, the boring part is a personal thing. But still, I would rather have it less formal. Just four people in a room, not wearing suits, sitting and talking about issues they actually care about, and being judged on their ability to argue coherently and passionately. Debate shouldn't be about dressing up in stuffy clothes and citing every sentence you read, rather, it should be about your opinions and what you think about the world.

Maybe that's just me, though.

I don't usually wear a full suit. And they have that sorta. It still tells you a topic. But it's you vs. one other person with no articles. It's just what you say.

I've never heard of that type of debate, but if I do, I'll certainly try it. I can't stand the current system that's established. For me, it sucks all the emotion out of debate. When I argue, I need to have my own opinions on a subject and be connected and familiar with it. Without those two requirements, I can't speak as well as I usually would.

Debate has policy and Licoln Douglas.
LD(Lincoln Douglas) :
1 vs. 1
No "evidence"
Still have to dress up.
Talks about more phiolosophical things.

CX(Policy, Cross-Examination)-
2 vs. 2
"Evidence"
Still dress up but not full suit unless you want.
More worldy matters.

Not for sure what school you go to but I know they have it, because I know it's in Texas.

Didn't know LD didn't have evidence. We're studying LD in debate class and it's treated like PF but with two people; cases still need to be built and evidence collected.

Yes, but you don't have a box like CX. It's a philosophy debate so you give your speeches over while its right or wrong to be this or that.

Yeah, I guess, but that's not the way my teacher made it sound.

Oh well, I still don't enjoy how formal debate is conducted.

Mine's next Friday. Everyone's going, so it'll be pretty epic, plus it's one of the biggest schools in the state. However, I'm never really 'prepared' for debate tournaments

As for the OP, there is such thing as "proper debate," but personally I can't stand it.

The main thing I advise, which you should do anyway in any real life arguement, is listen and fully understand what someone is saying and where they're coming from, whether you agree with it or not. Be open-minded about it. Don't just sit there and stubbornly disagree and regurgitate the same exact thing you just said, as that is what the other person will do as well, and it will just keep repeating the same way making fuck all progress.

And please don't become one of those debators who are all about putting people down for their opinions in a smart-arse way. We have too many of those.

What isn't?

If I agree with you, and you agree with me then what is there to debate? Exactly.
I wasn't thinking that we have to agree with everything at first, more that we try to understand each others' opinions.

Don't like losing? Then be right, or don't argue.
:D

I didn't say that, I said I don't like the idea that debates are something you can lose.
Read properly.
