View Full Version : Microsoft Labels Autistic Boy A Cheater On Xbox Live

There's a bit of a she-said, they-said situation going on near Seattle, with the mom of an 11-year-old boy saying Microsoft reset his gamerscore unfairly and the company saying it was done because he was cheating. Regardless of the truth, the boy has been branded a cheater on Xbox Live and has to earn whatever achievements he had before all over again.

Jennifer Zdenek told Q13 FOX News that her son Julius Jackson went online recently only to discover that his gamerscore had been reset and his account branded as belonging to a cheater. She contacted the company, only to be told that the boy was cheating – which he denies – and that the reset could not be reversed. That's when she took her story to the media.

Zdenek says her son is autistic and that playing games on Xbox Live is his only social outlet. Because of this, she says, he's been devastated by what's happened.

Some stupid video about the incident I didn't watch. (http://www.q13fox.com/videobeta/3f40b5ca-2e45-4928-9aa2-952470ea1468/News/X-box-Live-Labels-Autistic-Boy-Cheater-)

Ok, what bugs me about this story is how Microsoft is being labed as some evil coropartion who had the intent on resetting his gamerscore (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gamerscore#Gamerscore) on Xbox LIVE just because he is autistic. This is what I replied to on the article comments, Oh look, Fox News. Of course they're going to make this skewed. They are making it seem like this happened because he's autistic. And my friend hacked his gammerscore and has the same cheater thing, but guess what - only HE can see it. I can't see it on his gamerprofile (unless I look on the website, but who does that? If you're in a game, no one's gonna look you up on the website to see if you're cheater. And like anyone cares on Xbox LIVE if you do; Gamerscore is just a number). He took a picture of his gamercard and sent it to me and his zone was "cheater", but if I were to go look at it, he's recreation. Microsoft doesn't go on one filed complaint - they go on multiple. And plus, for you to have your gamerscore reset, they know if it's glitched. My friend has a legit 70,000+ gamerscore, but my friend (aforementioned) who got his gamerscore reset had non-legit 100,000+ gamerscore. Microsoft knows what they're doing. And don't you have to be thirteen to be on Xbox LIVE, anyway?

Also, Microsoft is 100% sure on their bannings - http://www.xbox.com/en-US/Live/Cheating
The kid is obviously lying.

The mom is probably doing this for media attention or something. The kid shouldn't even be on Xbox LIVE since he isn't thirteen. I know I'm being hypocritical since I got it when I was twelve, but I don't care. :P

I'm tired of people getting offended at how private corporations act. I hear Americans complain about socialism all the time, and then they bitch and moan about how the big companies aren't doing what they want them to do. I had to read about some fucking idiot complain about the high price of food at baseball games in English today, and how he "wasn't going to take it anymore!" Fuck you. If you can't handle how a private corporation does its business, shut the fuck up. Nobody's forcing you to use their services. Unless you're actually getting ripped off (fraud-wise), I don't want to hear any baww'ing. When you sign up for Xbox Live, you're expected to follow the established rules no matter who you are.

Just because this kid was autistic doesn't mean he wasn't cheating and underage. Microsoft did the right thing. Stop using autism as an excuse for things— he's obviously mentally capable enough to go on Xbox Live and cheat; stop being a little asshat about it and admit that the kid broke the rules he knew he was supposed to abide by.

The fact that some people on that website are fucking stupid enough to actually believe Microsoft both knew the kid was autistic and decided to troll him and that, because of his condition, he's somehow immune from the rules we all have to follow disgusts me.

Video games were a big deal to me all throughout my elementary years, and I'm not obese. The kid has autism; they're usually not social butterflies.

Because every kid who puts video games as something important in their life will become fat, obscene man cave dwellers.

You do realize he's autistic, right? Or did you not read the article (which is what seems to be the case every time you post here)? And you're complaining about childhood obesity being caused by video game addiction. Are you trolling or just plain dumb boy? Childhood obesity is caused when parents cave into their child's demands allowing them to overeat unhealthy foods.

Back on topic, corporations make mistakes. However, the change can't be reversed. I can totally understand if he's upset over it (he's autistic for Christ's sake, what do you expect?). A bit overblown that this is being picked up by the media though.

Here's a crazy idea: Maybe he was cheating.

I stand by what I said earlier in my rant. Microsoft has every right to do this, and they were only enforcing the rules that every Xbox Live member agrees to abide by in the Terms of Service. The mother of the kid and all the people bawwing should quiet down, this is a non-issue. Autism is not an excuse for cheating.

this is horrible

...why?

This is some historic news...
I just don't understand why the mother went to the media (apart from the obvious reason: attention.)
All Microsoft did was reset his gamerscore. Get over it, maybe? I assume he can still PLAY (I don't own an xBox, so please correct me if I'm wrong.)

Of course he can still play. He just lost all his precious achievements.

before that mother went to FOX, she should have read the TOS first; it is very emberassing for her if the rules say you have to be 13.

EXCEPTION: was the name of the account-holder that of the mother? maybe then it'd be alright...

I never said that, i said thats how it happens, from kids ignoring physical activity and playing video games all day.

it just happens, and not just senseless ass talk. especially combined with a poor diet, yes, it absolutely does.

Wait now. What makes you say he was labelled a cheater because is autistic?
Let's say for arguments sake he did cheat(which is possible, believe it or not), not labelling him a cheater even though there is evidence against him would be discrimination.
Whether he cheated or not, they wouldnt just say "this guys autistic, lets accuse him of this". That's stupid. They obviously had a proper reason, mistake or not.

Nevertheless, this is sad. That he worked hard for his score and now its gone. But it can't stop you from not playing. He can start again.

I'm addicted to video games and I'm fit. Go to the gym daily. This is a big deal to him because it's his escape from whatever he lacks in life.

It's absurd that this is getting so much media attention. I understand that due to the autism, the kid is probably more upset than someone else his age would be. However, that is NO reason for the mother to raise such a goddamned stink about the whole thing.

I'm suprised about why someone would fuss over something that Fox News said. Everything they say is bullshit anyway. You do realise that they had an entire show devoted to complaining about Mass Effect's abundance of ant-woman pornography even though the game was rated 12 by the BBFC and allowed you to play as a femlae, right? Although this is slightly off-topic, I'm just saying that one should never trust Fox News is known to be very unreliable and therefore, I wouldn't care about what they air.

As for the kid, he was obviously cheating. And really, who cares about a seemingly pointless number returning to zero? I wouldn't go all over the media if my rep were to suddenly go to 0 for some reason.

UPDATE: The mother of the 11-year-old autistic boy who previously insisted her child did not cheat to get achievements has now admitted she was aware of foul play.

Mother Jennifer Zdenek knew that her child, Julius Jackson, gave his Xbox Live Gamertag information to a fellow player in another city, who then used forbidden methods to unlock Halo 3 Recon armor. The mother has now confessed to Q13 Fox News after receiving the following email from head of Xbox Live enforcement, Stephen Toulouse.

"The account Zombie Kill67 transferred from the Xbox it is normally seen on, to an Xbox in another city. The account earned several achievements for Halo 3 that can only be done online and in succession. It was clear they were unlocked out of order and offline. Earning successive online achievements out of order and offline is an impossible feat, not due to skill, but due to the technology of the system. It can only be done by modifying the account and faking the achievements."

Zdenek admits she knew her son gave his XBL info to another gamer, but doesn't think the child is to blame. "I did warn him about this but seeing it wasn't a bank password or anything big, it's just a game we didn't worry about it too much and the boy just offered to give him Recon Armor, which he did," she said. Her battle with Microsoft is over, and she's settling for a free month of XBL and fresh Gamertag.

Watch the video below to see how her perception of Xbox Live went from being her son's "only friend" while she had a news channel's attention, to "just a game" when the truth surfaced.

I'm so shocked.

Goddammit. God FUCKING dammit. I am truly sick of people vying for the (admittedly retarded) media's attention with blown-up accusations.

And it's just peachy that he got a free month of XBL and a new gamertag. That won't encourage this type of shit at aaaaaaaaaaall. And you can just be certain that if Microsoft hadn't done so, they'd be sued on some trumped-up charge of discrimination. Jesus.

This isn't something special they did for this perticular kid, EVERYONE gets it.
