Why do i have to have 100 post to PM. Its useless, why even have PM then. Forums 2nd way of communication is to PM. Private Messages also prevent spam on forum category, I understand the Visitor Messages can be used, but it isn't really convenient.

Please take this into mind, thank you :)

Many users have been complaining of people sending them spam messages, etc. So they made the rule that you must have 100 posts to send private messages to members.

It used to be 25 posts, but I guess people were working their way around that.

Besides, Visitor Messages are nearly exactly the same thing as Private Messages. Except everybody can see them, but that's not too much of an issue.

And if you want to send a 'personal' message? This just leads to spamming on forums.

I've owned plenty of Forums, what i would do if people were PM spamming [Which i have done a lot lately because i click once and it sends twice.] create a separate rank with the parent rank being registered users, but named say "PM Spammer" and have that rank limited, until said user has 100 Posts.

Instead of limiting people who do not spam, its just not right.

People in the past have used this site as a way to hook up with people or to find people to cam and trade photos with. This is a help site for teenagers between the age of 13-19. 90% of the people here are under age, which means the people using this site as a source of people to picture trade or cam with are actually committing a crime. We have a job to protect the people here and if having these things in place helps us to do that then thats what we'll do. I know its a huge inconvenience but this isn't a social networking site.

I understand where your coming from as i said before I have ran forums, you should add to disclaimer at sign up, "If you receive any messages through PM, Or VM It is your obligation to report said user. If you do not do so, we will not be held accountable."

Cause I still do not find it right to punish others for someone else's stupidity.

It's really not a punishment. If you're not going to stick around long enough to get the required number of posts to PM, why bother?

Actually we can be

Kaius

We've done that in the past and it makes no difference. So this is how we have to do things now, as i said i know its an inconvenience but the safety of vulnerable members is the most important thing here. Private messaging is a privilege not a right, 100 posts is really not that difficult to achieve without spamming.

If you warn the user upon sign up how?

I just find 100 to high, 50 would be more reasonable.

Kaius
January 24th, 2011, 06:31 PM
It won't be changing any time soon. 50 is too low and will be exploited.

I'm really happy I don't get PMs from users who haven't been very active in the forums. I'd rather get an idea about what sort of a person they are, and not have horny idiots trying to hit on me or whatever. I think the 100 post thing works.

Nathan109

I understand why your doing it now, i just don't like the minimum post requirement. Anything from 50-80 is good.

I also just thought about this. If a person were to PM you, you should be able to PM back. You just cannot start a PM conversation, you would have to wait for some-one else to start it.

Also if u have a record of PMs sent to you, somehow involve a filter. If the PM sent to you is over say 18 days, you cannot reply back.

Im not saying its a bad idea, its just to limiting.

Why is it such an issue? If you want to talk to somebody, VM them. Unless what you want to say is super secret or private or against the rules.

For any member who intends on sticking around for a while the current system is more or less perfect. VT as it stands revolves around a close community were anyone that would have reason to want to "private message" for privicy reasons rather than a Public Message would already be known to the site and would more than likely already know the person however brief they are messaging. There's also the factor that they are least likely to abuse the rules of PM as they've stuck around long enough to gain the liberty they aren't going to want to lose it any time soon.

In a way, yes. To be a support forum the user who wishes to recieve help will want to know other members on a more personal level and to be trustworthy to a certain extent (we are on the internet afterall) which will include a presence on the forum.

Plus as an extra additive which has been noted in many other discussions relating to similar context, teen sites breed pedophiles... At least with the 100 post mark we can hope that some get bored and leave, we can't stop them but we can at least discourage them; for example: I don't know you, you could be 55 years old for all I know.

I understand that assumption, but it doesn't give anyone rights to assume everyone is a pedophile

What right is needed? If a site wants to be cautious then by all means.

If you're so desperate as to complain about the rules just so you can PM somebody -- do you even know anybody here? -- it's going to seem suspicious.

You've never been PM'd by some thirteen year old who has three posts and is asking how big your penis is. I'm all in favor for one hundred post limit since it doesn't take forever to get to 100. People would come here and make like two posts and start camming with people, OP. You've been here for a day. I've been here for two years. You don't know what went on behind the lines in PM with this site.

Not everyone does. If they did, we probably wouldn't have this rule, would we?

Done.

If you still have questions as to why the limit is 100 posts please PM me. It's our job to maintain site security, this means all content within the site, including PM's. New members aren't labeled as "pedophiles" we just have a system that let's them earn privileges. So that way they earn the right to PM. It's for your safety as well as everyone else'.
