Ok I think I know quite a lot of genres but I was trying to explain some to my sis and realised I don't really know what i'm talking about.

Genre name: Dark Electro aka Dark EBM, Harsh EBM, Electro-Industrial, Hellektro, Aggrotech.

Key features: Synth, Harsh distorted death-metal-like vocals, deep and dark synth and electronic noises, Electronic Guitars, and Percussion - 120 - 160 bbp.

Lyrical Themes: Sense of dark futuristic technology(Chemicals, Body Parts, Plastic Surgery Aesthetic, Electronics, Cybernetics, Robotics, Transhumanism and etc.) and Dystopia(Corrupted Politics and Bad social life, Anarchism, War, and etc.)

Example artists: Psyclon Nine, Komor Kommandor, God Module, Preemptive Strike, Die Sektor, C-Lekktor, Amduscia, Hocico, X-Fusion, Nurzery [Rhymes], Wumpscut.

Genre name: Grunge
Key features: Distorted guitar, stripped down instrumentation, power chords
Example artists: Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden
Lyrical themes: Personal angst, irritation, disillusionment with society and peers

Key features: Fast beats with double bass, speed-picking, extreme distortion, complex and long solos, long songs in general
Example artists: Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, Testament, Anthrax
Lyrical themes: War, violence, drugs, politics, rebellion

Genre name: Alt Rock
Key features: Average sort of rock sound, usually distortion with some exceptions. Sometimes alternating between distortion and clean. Usually clean vocals but ocasionally screams etc.
Example artists: Flyleaf, 30 Seconds to Mars
Lyrical themes: Usually something depressing

Genre name: Pop- punk/ Power pop.
Key features: Catchy guitar riffs, strong vocals with lots of repition.
Example artists: Paramore, You me at six, All Time Low
Lyrical themes: Relationships, usally things lots of people can relate too.

[Rutherford The Brave]

Genre: Jam
Key Features: Long extended songs, improvisation, synths, great players, lots of great fills and techniques. Great Riffs, Great Lyrics, and Great use of alternative instruments (Ex. Yonder Mountain Spring Band, and Phish with the clav.)
Example Artists: Grateful Dead, Phish, Moe, Yonder Mountain String Band, Disco Biscuits, Umphrey's Mcgee, Dave Matthew's Band, Frank Zappa.
Lyrical Themes: Something upbeat usually, abstract lyrics usually about some sort of dream or funny thing. Sometimes about drugs but generally not.
