View Full Version : Allowing [IMG][/IMG] code back in signatures

Is there any problem in enabling the [IMG] tags back in signatures? I honestly think it would be better than using the 'signature picture' option. It's not that hard to copy/paste [IMG] tags from one place to another. For instance, I have a picture that shows my recently listened to tracks from last.fm, but I can't put it in my signature here because it will simply make the picture into a regular hyper link (not showing the actual picture). I'm sure it wouldn't be that much trouble to allow the tags back into signatures and keeping the 'signature picture' option available for those who don't want to use tags.

Only reason why I prefer people upload their images to VT is so they can be resized dimension wise and file size wise. Allowing IMG tags will allow people to hotlink to any image that can be obnoxiously huge in size which will slow down page loading times significantly.

Understandable, but I'm sure there has to be a way to tell a user if the image they want to hotlink is too large to be put into the signature?

I know one of my other forums doesn't allow hot-links over a certain size to be put into signatures. It says they need to resize the image.

We have the image resize, have it to a smaller setting for signatures?

There /must/ be an option to limit the images in signatures to only 400x125 & a maximum file size of say, 1M? Or 512K?

Yes there are options to limit the dimensions of hotlinked images but in all the image resizers I used the one in signatures are really buggy. And even if there was a way to check the file size before accepting it into the signature, what's to stop the user from linking to a small image. Then after VT accepts that URL, they overwrite the old image from their own server with a bigger one? Easy loophole right there and there's too much shit to do on here to add yet another thing to police.
Although there is no way for vBulletin to check the file size and dimensions of hotlinked images anyway. I'm going to keep it the way it is now.

I've seen another forum do this actually and it works amazingly.
They do it in sigs and posts.
In a post, no IMG can be greater than 800x800 (Their choice), anything larger WON'T be accepted, and somehow it can detect even in an edited post, thus preventing larger images.
The signature does the same, I'm not sure how they prevent the above "URL loophole" though; however, it does prevent it as we've tried dodging it before.
