View Full Version : Old threads with 'warning'

threads that are a certain age, say over 3 months old, will have a 'warning'...something like this:

Warning, this thread has not been posted in for over 120 days

It will be placed somewhere near the Quick Reply. In a color that attracts your attention quickly. I thought maybe this would prevent people from bumping threads so much

Or just add an auto-lock function?

that was suggested before...but OPs can bump their own threads so idk, a warning is better...maybe

yeah I like to look for bright almost neon colors they would really draw my attention

It's not a big deal that an old thread gets bumped. I personally believe some of them shouldn't be locked just because they're old, but y'know, that's not my call.

Just as a user can request a thread be locked, an auto-locked thread could easily be unlocked by staff upon request, after all, a three month old thread would very seldom need to be bumped anyway.

Does it really happen that much because I guess I just don't see it.

I like that idea, but i think it should be 1 month (30 days)

I like this idea, it sounds like a nice alternative to the auto-lock suggestion that keeps coming up in my opinion.

There are some threads that are ages old but since they are still active ( for example like the ones in VTArcade ) auto lock function is not good.

auto-lock function enabled for certain forums only

Go by last post instead of thread creation date.

I like the warning, that way less threads might be bumped and we don't have to get into this auto-lock nonsense. Personally, auto-lock sounds like more trouble than it's worth. I don't mind locking threads, and especially in The Psych Ward there's a lot of OPs bumping their threads with information on how they're doing and such.

I don't like the idea. We shouldn't be forced to implement something that people should be looking for. Plus, most things 2 pages back are always old threads. Just use common sense.

I agree.

I'm one of the most active posters on vt and yet the number of times when I bump an old thread are miniscule. Its no effort at all to check the previous post date. Anyway if you are a regular its really easy to spot threads that crop up with new posts that are not current, so report them, every member has a role to contribute to the well running of the site.

If a new member accidentally bumps an old thread, so what? They wont get infracted for it, just a gentle heads up pointing out that they should me more careful next time.

Does it really take that much to click the mouse a couple or time to get to the first page and realize that the thread is old? I don't think the auto-lock feature or the warning is needed when the dates are stamped on every post and thread.

Considering how many old threads are bumped by idiotic new members, I would say yes, it really does take that much effort.

sometimes the members don't see the date....or they don't pay attention :S if there's a 'warning' it will catch their attention and will make them think twice.

I know new members can do it by accident, but members that AREN'T new...:S

how will that help at all

less threads are bumped and mods can focus on more important things than say 'do not bump old threads' and lock them.

even if a lot of people like this, idk how this will be implemented and if there's even a mod for this for vB. :S (maybe there is, idk)

Its not a bad idea and there's a simple mod for it so I wouldn't be opposed to giving it a try.

Sounds like an awesome idea. I always forget to check and see if a thread is old or not. =-P

how would a warning on an old thread help at all. if they saw the thread they wouldn't need a warning telling them not to bump it because why would they make a new thread exactly like the old one if they saw the old thread and its posts

As in an issue occurs, help is given.
Seven months later, some narb posts in the thread giving advice.
You see?

I TOLD you. some people are blind and don't see the age. a warning in a bright color will attract their attention and they most likely won't bump the old threads.
