Dear Sir/Madame
Re: Work experience placement 27th June – 7th July 2011
I am writing to ask about the possibility of a placement of work experience within the hospital and department of orthopaedics, this will take place on the stated above date and is standard practise for the year of which I am in-year ten.
The area of Orthopaedics and Paediatrics greatly interests me, and I indeed have plans to go forth and study within one of these two areas, later pursuing it as a career; my interest in this is mainly guided by my own experiences, having suffered an elbow issue that has led to my radial head removal and an issue on a later date that required my clavicle to be plated. After much study into the different branches of medicine available I find these two the most relevant to me and my experiences, as well as understanding them. It would be a somewhat great pleasure for me to able to shadow a doctor in the time I have work experience allocated, I feel that this would not only give me a wealth of real life experience, but would also benefit my knowledge of medicine at my age of fifteen years.
I feel I have the required skills, be it social and academic, to gain much from being in the presence of your department for my period of work experience and also to not be a burden for you in the hospital. An example of my listening skills is the way I take in and remember all of what my consultant, Dr Simon Lambert, says to me whenever we are in his presence for surgical or pre-existing needs. I also can integrate well with people and a group situation, this clearly demonstrated by my membership in the Swanmore College Committee where I study for three of the four years I have been at the school. In that time I have helped push forward ideas and solve issues related to the school. I feel that my grades also reflect my commitment to gaining and advance my knowledge, with my targeted grades being all A or A*.
I really do hope that you consider my proposal, and indeed find me a suitable individual to shadow a doctor for the duration of my time, not only will I find it a great privilege, but also an opportunity to gain both a wealth of knowledge and experience.

Yours Faithfully

I think it's good however I would point out that the phrase "the year of which I am in- year 10" sounds slightly strange I think it should be "year 10, which I am in"
Also are you going to include anything about the subjects you take I know when I did work experience this question came up.
