Three young children and a teen were rushed to hospital Friday afternoon after being hit by a car that crashed into the daycare playground at a Vancouver elementary school.
The injuries suffered by the four were described as "severe," but police say they're not life-threatening.
The children — two elementary school students and a toddler — are being treated at B.C. Children's Hospital. The three children were all related.
Their caretaker, believed to be a teenaged female, was taken to Vancouver General Hospital.
The four were walking on the sidewalk side of a fence by the daycare when two vehicles collided at the intersection of Grandview Highway and Woodland Drive.
A Honda Civic sedan jumped the curb, hit the four and then smashed through the chainlink fence into the playground at Grandview Elementary School in East Vancouver before being stopped by a second metal fence just a metre short of a swing set.
A crumpled blue children's stroller and a torn jacket marked the scene.
"They got dragged through the fence," said Andrea Lowe, whose two boys attend the school.
School officials said the accident occurred just 45 minutes after school had let out early on Friday, so there were not a lot of children present.
Speed, alcohol or drugs do not appear to be factors in the accident, police said. Neither driver was hurt.
