It really refers to the fact that the first time a girls is fully penetrated, she "bleeds" as a lining has been broken. Hence "popping the cherry"

It's when the womans Hymen is broken, torn, or ripped.
Sometimes bleeding, sometimes not.
Can be caused by penetration, masturbation, tampons etc.
Called "Popping the Cherry" in slang terms.

No, it's not, the term popping the cherry refers to when the hymen, a small piece of skin that tears easily (in a woman's vagina) is broken, which can cause bleeding, as user Infinity said, it's not really anything to do with loosing your virginity.
You can be a virgin, but your hymen is broken, and you can be a non-virgin and your hymen is intact.

Popping the cherry means the breaking of the hymen within the vagina. The hymen is the membrane within the vaginal opening. The hymen is associated with a women's virginity. When the penis enters the vagina for the first time, the penis tears the hymen. The tearing of the hymen will cause pain at first but the pain will subside.
