Recently there was a fire in an abandoned warehouse here in New Orleans. * persons, commonly referred to as gutter punks perished in the fire. From interviews with others, several who new the victims, it was found that they mostly had homes they returned to from time to time, but mostly just rode freight trains from town to town. They would stay a while, crashing in abandoned buildings and panhandle. The money would be pooled and the group would decide weather to spend it on cheap wine or whiskey. One explained they smelled like they did on purpose because it would keep others away. One young woman said she had a child that he mother took care of. She would go home for a while to be with her until the urge to roam got too strong and she would hop a freight train out. Another young man had 2 prosthetic leg's from falling under a train. I'm fairly sure he didn't hop trains any more though.

Is this similar to the way UK street punks live? And yes, they have the usual punk dress tattoos and piercings.

Actually I was attempting to get a response from a UK member about if these people are similar to those commonly called street punks in th UK. But it apears you will force me to defend what I wrote as well as address your comments beyond what I wrote. Nothing I said in that post is again homeless. Every person by his existence takes from society and has a responsibility to give back what he can. Some can not give as much as they take. Thats fine. Some choose to take more than they give. That's not fine. Doesn't the mother stuck with taking care of her daughters kid deserve to be free of that burden? Don't taxpayers deserve to be free of that burden also? A young man acting irresponsibly and trespassing on private property looses his legs. Now the rest of us must give him new ones and probably pay him a disability check for the rest of his life. I as a taxpayer (yes I paid taxes until I began classes) should be free of taking care of him. Hopefully he can't collect if he refuses rehab and sutable work.

Yeah, tax payers shouldn't have to be worried about some one else. But if we didnt have taxes in general people would actually make some money. If you have money why not give it, instead of buying usuless crap that nobody needs. NO ONE NEEDs a gigantic tv and shit like that. My dad shouldn't take care of my kid, but he does out of his own pocket sometimes and Im poor as hell. Im pretty sure that you as a person probably living comfortably can give up some money so the less fortunate might be able to put food on the fucking table for once.

your dad HELPS you. You didn't dump your kids on him and go roaming around the country. You clearly take responsibility. That puts you in a totally different picture. The problem I have is irresponsible people who CHOOSE to milk the system take resources from those who need help. To spend money on a special shelter for someone who chooses to live on the street would take money that could be spent to help that homeless vet who's on the street because of mental illness. A mental illness that pushes him away from the very help he needs. We need to see that sometimes what we think is helping is actually enabling.
