Dungeon Siege 2

I expect experienced Dungeon Siege 2 players who finished the game on mercenary difficulty.

I have a question.
On Veteran and Elite difficulties, Lothar is a Combat Mage ( at the gates of Eirulan ) and if you try to recruit him he says that you can't because you already have him in your party ( yeah I had Lothar as a melee in my party )

So my question: If I recruit Lothar,( in mercenary difficulty ) and disband him to the inn after some time ( say, after I recruit Eva ). Can I get the Combat Mage Lothar at the Veteran difficulty? Will it say "You already have Lothar ( in the inn )" etc ?
