I'm 13 and almost 14 and i have taken melatonin before. It worked really well on helping me sleep usually twice as fast. I haven't experienced any bad side effects of it, and i also haven't heard of anyone with any side effects.

Hello Polk,
I'm 15 years young and I've tried melatonin multiple times, each time I didn't really feel anything. When I was feeling down and just wanted to go to sleep I did technically OD on them, but I never felt sleepy or tired from them. Everyone's different though.
Here to help,

I'm 16, and I took melatonin for 3 weeks, never did a thing for me.

I was put on it the last time I was in the psych ward, so I was 17. Made me feel drugged up, but it didn't get me to sleep and certainly couldn't compare to my Seroquel. I was so mad they wouldn't let me stay on it for some reason. I'm back on it now however when I have tough nights.

I'm sixteen and I take it on a regular basis, to regulate my sleep cycle. It's not a serious sleeping pill, so it won't immediately knock you out, but it does help for those nights when you're tense and just can't get to sleep. It's a lot less risky than taking over the counter sleeping pills with anti-depressants, and I've heard that it's more natural. The only side affects I've ever experienced are some weird dreams.

It works...for awhile. Then your body gets used to it, since it has natural chemicals. But that stuff gives you CRAZY dreams.

It's good for letting your body sort of know when it's time to sleep, it helps set the rhythm. I'm someone that suffered with severe insomnia almost all of my life and it's taken a lot to get me to desire sleep properly, but now I just take melatonin sometimes and lay in bed. It's definitely safe and actually considered good for you in a lot of ways, just don't take a ton or it can be neurotoxic, I'm not sure exactly how much is required for that though.

Melatonin only truly works "wonders" for people who have a melatonin deficiency. It's actually something that is naturally produced in the body to help regulate your circadian rhythms, so it certainly isn't harmful. Even if you don' have this specific issue, it can help, and as there's no side effects it's worth a shot.
Personally it works wonders, I can basically guarantee I'll be out cold within 30 minutes of taking some, though I don't know if this is part placebo effect or not. Either way, I have major sleep issues without it so it has been a godsend.

It's not really a drug, it's a hormone which is naturally occurring but the kind you get from the pharmacy is synthesised, so it's not really all that natural.
Plus, I remember reading somewhere that if you take it over prolonged periods it actually stops your body naturally producing the stuff, potentially making your insomnia a whole lot worse, unless of course you have a melatonin deficiency as Rex said.

I mean, if we really want to get technical, all hormones are either drugs, steroids, or both (I think most are both for some reason)

Hello,
First take her to her pediatrician and get the doctor's evaluation and recommendation, do not do it first without pediatrician approval.
Thanks
