I'm not sure if this is the same as having a girlfriend, but what I do is make sure they are first comfortable with you touching them (like tickling them, leaning on them, etc) and then you can have a sleepover or something like that. Just make sure that they are actually comfortable with you before asking otherwise they will feel really awkward if they say no...
