I actually like it. Although it does seem a bit rushed, which you've already alluded to, the top half of the sketch is really good. The body curves too much, in my opinion, but that's my only real issue. It'll be interesting to see how you improve once you get back into sketching reguarly and at a sociable hour, given that it was drawn at 5am and your first in 6 months!

I know you are going for a comical-style character... but you have to be careful. The head is very large compared to the body.
Perhaps you have seen this before, doesn't hurt if you see it again.

Added another for today. I could've waited a few minutes and saved myself the trouble tomorrow, but no, making excuses for myself would defeat the point of the artistic endeavor. As I said before, I'm hoping to get one or more new drawings up every day, and if anyone is really anal about following my progress, I'm working within the pacific timezone.
Edit/Update: Just sorted out my schedule for today. I have time to finish today's piece but I'm not going to be back home until very late so it might not show up here until tomorrow.

When I look at the top, I see a vase/goblet.

If I look in the middle, I can see both depending on what I want to see.

Apologies for the lack of updates, folks. I've picked up the stomach flu lately and I've spent the better half of the past few days in bed or hunched over the toilet purging my bowels. I'll get back in the game once I'm feeling a little better.

Well, looks like I don't have class in first period tomorrow due to a badass free graduation breakfast. Since I can stay up late, thought I'd give a crack at filling up an entire page in my sketchbook. You can check back on the OP to see what I came up with. Or you can just click here (http://i53.tinypic.com/11rgjgp.jpg) you lazy motherfucker.
I won't bother explaining it all, but I'm doing some concept art for a project a few friends and I are working on. A little bit of a French theme going (Remember when the French were cool? Me neither.) on and my scanner is still busted so I'll see if I can go over this in a sharpie before or after school today for clarity. Pencil marks smudge against the pages and fade over time anyway, so I'll have to do that anyway.

01/04/11 - I've always been a fan of the "sketch" look on drawings. This piece is no exception. The person's lips I feel could have been done a tad bit better, as well as some form of definition added to the clothing. The vulture, overall, is very appealing to me. IMO.
02/15/11 - I have no negative feedback. I absolutely enjoy this piece.

In all fairness, I fully admit some of the anatomy in the picture could use work and a number of my lines are pretty sloppy.

Composition and contrast management (or lack thereof) are my main gripes with 02/15/11. Each individual element of the picture has qualities, but they are completely drowned when combined.

I'd suspect that's largely since it all just started as individual doodles that I only felt like connecting much later into the process.

That's indeed true for the composition. The contrast issues remain at individual element level, though, especially for the soldier and for the gun lady.

I really shouldn't post incomplete work, so here's a little something (http://i55.tinypic.com/2ciab5z.jpg) I'm working on. It's still a work-in-progress so I won't add this to the list on the OP until it's done.
Edit: Yes, I realize the right side of his face is a little stretched. I've already fixed that, but I won't be assed taking another picture until the entire thing is done.

If we're talking a page-filling clusterfuck like this (http://i52.tinypic.com/2z3qtcp.jpg) or this (http://i55.tinypic.com/173bmg.jpg), usually an hour or two in pencil. When I go over with my marker, I can cover every line in about 40 minutes if I'm feeling lazy or it could take as much as three hours if I wanted to be extremely meticulous. For reference, both of those images were more on the lazy side of things rather than meticulous.
This, of course, isn't counting any time I waste looking up reference images or staring flatly at my blank sketchbook without a single idea.

Let's face it. I will never be able to draw.
Anything can seem difficult if you don't understand the methodology to it. I used to look at the Japanese (written) language as nothing but incomprehensible gibberish, but with the right instruction, I'm able to read it semi-fluently after only being in the class at school for two weeks or so.
Anybody could learn to draw as well as I do, even better than I do- They just need to be committed to putting up with the mistakes and garbage they'll inevitably make and actually looking up how to do things properly.

If I took the classes, I could probably improve but, I don't think I will be taking a class anytime soon.
As for the Japanese writing, it seems interesting, and I may look into learning some of it one day.

She, actually. The faintness of pencil marks makes the female lips a little hard to make up, and the scarf and loose clothes sorta downplay her chest.

They're slaves and criminals subjected to heinous scientific tomfoolery that turns them into tasty delicious fat little pig people to be ground up into cheap canned food for the masses. Unfortunately for the powers that be, they retain enough human intelligence and ingenuity to operate lever-action rifles and wear silly hats.

Stylistic choice, really. It's concept art for a game project a friend and I are working on, and considering the lighter hearted nature of the project, I didn't feel like drawing things as realistically as possible was necessary.
