Today my mom mentioned she wants to get me some. I'm all for it. I hate this feeling of loneliness and dread. I just have a few questions before I agree to it.
Do they really help? I mean, I don't want to take a medicine for no reason.
Are they hard to take? I don't want to have problems taking them at first.
Can I get addicted to them? I have problems with addictions already. I'm very easily addicted to something I love.
Thanks in advance.

I'll admit, I haven't been prescribed anti-depression meds yet, but I have had anxiety pills.
My pills really worked well. They simply change around the chemisty in your brain so that you feel better. You have to remember though, your brain can win out against the drugs. If you don't WANT to feel happy/good, it doesn't matter what you take. If you do want to be happy when you take them it will work succesfully.
As long as you have a drink (non-alchoholic) with the pills, they should go down well.
You can become addicted to any drug, sorry to inform you. I was addicted to the pain meds I took for my arm, but luckily enough, the prescription wasn't refilled.

Yes, they do help.
Are they hard to take? I don't want to have problems taking them at first.
What exactly do you mean by 'hard to take'?
Can I get addicted to them? I have problems with addictions already. I'm very easily addicted to something I love.
Yes, you can become addicted to them.

I took Zoloft and Abilify combined and didn't have a problem. I had to gradually take lighter doses to quit taking it, because going cold turkey on it will offer up some bad withdrawals for lunch.

I have to take pills as well, they work great they make everything seem so much better :) I wouldnt say they are addicting, I find if I stop taking them things go bad real bad.... but as long as you take them when you need them they should be good :)

Depending on your body and the drug, they can help. I have never been happy with any depression meds I've taken however (and I've been on quite a few different ones). I've been on a lot like I said, never got addicted to them but there are probably a few out there that might be addictive, I don't know.
Also yes, define hard to take. You mean when you actually take them? Usually there isn't any specifics on when and the conditions, though I know my mum's medicine reacts badly with grapefruit so she can't eat it, strange but true :P

I've never taken depression pills, but my mum is a doctor and we've had the "do they really work" discussion before.
She said that she was doubtful of them when she first entered medical school, said that she thought it was just a placebo effect, but that now she really thinks they do work. She's seen them given to patients with mental disabilities that mean they can't possibly know they are being given them, but it still has a positive effect on them. In that situation it can't possibly be the placebo effect.
I'm sorry I can't answer your other questions Adam, but I hope that helped :)

Well, yes they do. Just keep your mind open and tell yourself that you want to get better. And if the kind you try first don't work, then you can try some other kind, cause different med's can have different effects on different people.
Are they hard to take?
Nope. Antidepressive pills are usually like tiny.. (at least what I know.) And as long as you drink like one whole glass (of water, for example) cause otherwise they can like.. Get stuck in your throat.. At least it feels that way. When that happens to me.. I feel shit like the rest of the day. Cause drinking more later if that happends, wont work.
Can I get addicted to them? I have problems with addictions already. I'm very easily addicted to something I love.
Well, you can get addicted to any drugs/meds. But as long as you take the amount you should and so on. And not just quit taking them, the risk shouldn't be as big.
I'm at 75mg Sertralin (if that's the right name in english)
But well I'll soon start to take lesser and lesser.
So soon I won't take them anymore.
They (and my bf ALOT) helped me out of my depression and so on.
I didn't get them until I ended up in Psych Ward after cutting too deep though.

I've been on anti-depressants for several months now. I was very sceptical, but they really have helped a lot. I'm still aware of all the things that caused the depression but seem able to cope better and not let it get on top of me.
My tablets are tiny, its unlikely you'd be given the same ones at your age. They do have one unfortunate side effect of a p101 variety, lol, but I guess thats just the particular ones I'm on.

Yes they can help, they don't always help everyone, so within a months time, you are not only not feeling better, but the depression has worsened, please consult your doctor, especially if you have feelings of hurting yourself or others.
Are they hard to take? All depends on your perception of medicine itself and taking it. You don't have to take anything you don't want to. I know for myself, I cannot trust myself with taking pills.
Are they can I be addicted to them? In some cases yes. Some will have an addictive side effect like a sleeping pill will. Especially if they make you feel better. I know I can no longer take pills unless they are held by someone and doled out to me. My past showed my addictive behavior. Just please beware of the pill Paxil and other knock off of such. Not because of the commercial because that does not apply to you, but it's a really shitty pill. As a result, I felt worse, I had them combined with Klonopin or known other than "Clonazepam" for anxiety. At my first week, I felt completely weird. Like I would completely forget what I was talking about. I felt like a drone.
Just make sure you ask questions when you're at the doctor. How much you're taking, what dosage, side effects, anything you should be aware of while using the pill. And please make sure that since you have shared of your addictive behavior that the pills are doled out to you by prescribed time and that you do not know where the pills are. It's only for your safety. If you have any other questions, please feel free to ask. I'm always here.

Yes, you can become addicted to them.
It depends on the type of pill. I don't think you can get physically addicted to SSRI's, and they're the most commonly prescribed antidepressant. I say physically, not psychologically. People can become psychologically addicted to anything.
I wish I could give you some personal experience, but one the psychiatrist mentioned putting me on sertraline (zoloft), I kind of had a hissy fit, and refused :P My parents were ok with it, they said it was my decision. And they think the therapy will have the same effect as medication would do, it'll just take longer. But everyone's different, it might be the right thing for you, it just wasn't for me.

Do they really work? I found that they did, yes, but it made me a lot more emotionally 'plain' and emotionally inept than I used to be. I also found it quite hard to think deeply about any thing. My thought processes became a lot more simplified. It got rid of the depression after a couple of weeks and generally levelled out my moods but with a few undesired side effects as mentioned.
Are they hard to take? Nope, no worse than taking any other tablet / capsule.
Can they be addictive? As Matt said, anything can become addictive. I never found that with mine, the only thing which stopped me from not taking them was the thought of getting the depression back.
