I'm thinking of doing photography in college, but I need a portfolio. I don't do art in school, and alot of people are telling me I need art. When I research the course it doesnt say I need art, it just says I need a portfolio.
So tell me please, is it possible for me to do photography without art?
How do I make a portfolio? What is a portfolio? (I've always thougt it's just an art folder..?)

Yes, it is an art folder. You don't necessarily need an art folder. Some colleges accept flash-drives and CDs, as well.

So as long you have the necessary number of art-work to get in. It depends on what you are going to take as well. If you are going to fine-arts, you need a few of good drawings and some Photographic images. Also, a long essay(Personal statement- about you, your ambitions, your future career in the art field) of at least 500 words is also asked.

Some colleges even gives you an assignment to fill up before entering - to draw some images, to take some pictures, to make an ad and etc. This is like an aptitude test(Like when they give you Physics, Chemistry and Maths exam when you want to go for Engineering, for example).

If you can't do anything, then it is just a waste of time going to an Art & Design college.

Some colleges do not need one. There will be a foundation year, where they will teach you from point zero.

You probably don't need art but people who do have art might have an advantage against you when it comes to the number of places the course offers.

A photography portfolio is a collection of your work. It's something which shows off your talent and lets people know the kind of things / styles you love shooting.

Some people will just make a big scrap book of all of their work, some will have different themes in different sections or they might have their work in chronological order. As has been mentioned, these days you can either create it in a physical medium (a scrapbook / big poster) or you could put it on a CD / memory stick.

As I've said, it's really all about showing off your work and making them realise that you have talent and potential. It's something well worth spending time on if it means it could get you onto a course in it :)

Nope shouldn't be hopefully :)

Just express yourself and your photography in it and you're on the right track :)
