View Full Version : When school finds out

Sorry for posting another thread but I have a quick question .
Basically my friends told a teacher I was self harming and I got confronted by this one teacher who then told my mum, that was awful but I convinced her I'm ok and now cut in less obvious places. Anyway the head of year saw me the next week and then made me have an appointment with the school nurse. That was awful but I didn't have to have another one.
Since then the original teacher has been "chatting" with me every so often, but now we've had a holiday I'm pretty sure she'll have forgotten.
Anyway I guess what I'm asking is will they just leave me to get on with it now? Or will they check up on me? Does anyone have any experience with schools finding out?

In England and the UK, it is seen as the teachers' responsibility to look after and ensure the well being of their students. This means, yes, the school will probably continue being concerned and most likely it will have been recorded somewhere. But they're really only trying to help, you need help. Self harming isn't doing you any good, and they know that. They won't just leave you to get on with something like this.
Albeit when I had problems the school was aware of, I received no moral or medical support in or out of school that worked for me. If that works for you, tell your head of year. But in honesty it probably doesn't work for you and you need all the help you can to get out of this. We can offer this at VT, but unless you're willing to change and want to stop self harming I don't think the school will let go, and rightly so.

But when they found out it wasn't a major problem the cuts were small and shallow it's gotten quite a lot worse but they don't know that are you sure they won't just think it's a phase and leave me alone?

Self harming is too serious to be left alone, while it's difficult to know at my best guess I would say it will be brought up again. You need to help yourself if you won't accept help from the school, if you ever want to talk just ask.

It will most likely be brought up again. Teachers are supposed to look after students to make sure they are alright. Self harm is a suicidal act, even if the cuts/burns/etc are extremely mild. It's seen as a suicidal act, and taken very seriously.

Thanks for your advice I guess I'm just going to have to hope the meeting with the school nurse and chats with the assistant head are enough and they won't think they need to offer more "help", I know I have a problem (if that's what you want to call it) but I can fix it without their "support".
