Moms Protest Nursing Woman's Removal From Plane
SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. (Nov. 16) - About 30 parents and their children sat in front of an airline counter Wednesday to protest the treatment of a passenger who said she was kicked off a plane for breast-feeding her child.
Mothers breast-fed their children and held up signs during the "nurse-in."
"I just think it's unbelievable that it happened in 2006, especially in Vermont" said Lora McAllister, a Swanton mother. "It's kind of mind boggling."
Emily Gillette of Santa Fe, N.M., had complained that she was kicked off an airplane because she was nursing her baby.
A complaint against two airlines was filed with the Vermont Human Rights, although Executive Director Robert Appel said he was barred by state law from confirming the complaint. He did say state law allows a mother to breast-feed in public.
Elizabeth Boepple, a lawyer hired by Gillette, 27, confirmed that Gillette filed the complaint late last week against Delta Air Lines and Freedom Airlines. Freedom was operating the Delta commuter flight between Burlington and New York City.
A Freedom spokesman said Gillette was asked to leave the flight after she declined a flight attendant's offer of a blanket.
"I was horrified that a mother could be humiliated like that," said Caroline Beer, 34, of Burlington.

Well that's what she gets for being so stubborn and refusing the blanket. I realize it's a natural thing, but have some consideration for the other people and children on the plane.
I agree.
She should understand that not everyone wants to see her exposed breast. Breastfeeding is as natural as things get, but show some consideration for those around you while doing it!

So, now she's a moron for not being ashamed of breastfeeding in public? What consideration for the kids? It's far better to let them see a breast than to let it become such a taboo, a child knows more about a dog or a cat by the time he/she is eight than the exterior of the human body. Also, this brings the matter of freedom up, freedom is all about offending people, if you don't like it, you can say something, and they have the right to syay fuck you and continue as long as it isn't hurting anyone. If you're offended, gee I wonder what you can do about it, maybe look away?

I completely agree with Popo.
Will seeing a breast be bad for a child? It's worse to hide the sight of breasts from them. And really, they could have just forced her to accept the blanket if they couldn't handle seeing a boob, not bloody kicked her off!

It's discusting. It's public exposure. I don't agree with it. If mother's
wanted to educate tyheir children they wouldprobably rather do it themselves.

Actually it's best to let the child wean him/herself, some children don't wean until seven, some at half a year, the self-weaned children are generally more healthy.

I agree with popo's first statement... is ridiculous... people's corncern about how movies have violence and guns, and then the sex topic comes out... its a natural thing, they did it, if they are women they will do it... I don't really see whats the big deal

It is NOT right to breast feed kids that far into childhood. I know everyone will jump on this saying "Its just social norms that say it is wrong, open your mind" sort of things. But it is wrong. To think that a seven year old goes home after school, walks up to their mum and says "mummy can I have a bit of your breast now please?" is seriously disturbing!

That is very rare. Children usually self-wean at least 4 years sooner.

But even at four its an unsettling thought.

Children don't start thinking nudity is dirty until around 8 or 9.
Also, 4 years sooner would be 3 years old.
