I was wondering, as there are multiple(4 have Request Threads) signature creators. If we could have Signature Of The Week.
Where each week a contest is to see who can make the best signature. Each week would have a theme, or pre-determined renders. Members would vote for the best, and at the end of the week, a winner would be announced.

DIY chico. Find a diary (or make one) and make it entirely member-ran. There doesn't need to be any staff involvement for such a thing.

True, but a contest needs a reward at the end.

No it doesn't.

Obviously I support the idea. Hur dur, why wouldn't I?
However, it does have it's cons.

First of all, there isn't a large portion of VT members who are actually into sig making, or any for of digital art for that matter. Secondly, what does the member get? There is no prize form or other motivation to encourage them to participate in a SOTW competition.

On the other hand, it could encourage more member activity in sections such as OW as they begin to dive into digital art or sig making with such a competition. This could also inevitably turn the entire OW section into a resources and tutorial section in mass.

I want to be undecided on this matter, but the Photoshop junkie in me support this.

There's always rep as a 'prize'

And bragging rights

Haha. Oh god, sorry, but to me that's a little ridiculous.

Any of those who were active in about 2008 might have remembered my Rep Guide. It was VT's official guide to using Rep.

One of the things I mentioned was to not give Rep to people just for their signature. Rep is to recognize someone's posts and how they contribute to the site - their signature could change several times in a single day.

Where did I get the idea about Rep being about one's posts and their contributions? Well, logic, and also the Administrator who suggested we start the Rep System said so. Based on that I think Rep being a prize greatly dilutes its purpose (even more diluted than it is now).

To Brighter.Tomorrow, this sounds like something you could do in your diary and run yourself. I don't think Admins could help or have the time to help with something like this.

maybe the prize could be a colored username...as long as it's not blue, green, or red....:S

how could that work
that would require staff involvement and i thought youd already decided on it being a member thing

Who cares? People give rep for poor reasons all the time regardless of whether or not there's some guideline saying they shouldn't. I still believe that needing a 'reward' for a forum contest is silly. Winning in itself should be satisfying.

I think having a weekly signature contest is silly.

I mentioned the Rep factor because obviously noobs have no idea what it's even supposed to be for. Maybe this is a small step in getting rid of it. But then again, who cares about that?

The only people who seem even mildly interested in this all registered in 2009. I'm pretty sure they understand what rep is.

A reward could be bragging rights, and I might have to dust off my photoshop and try it out sometime.

Prize could be the winner's sig thread is stickied for a week (Assuming they had one.)

Face it. The reputation system has always, and will always be abused. I'll admit that at least fifty percent of my rep came from my signature thread. Even moreso I've got random reps for pointless reasons such as making someone laugh, which is of less contribution than making a graphics request.

And yeah, you may think a sig contest is silly, but I believe half of the newer sections on VT are monotonous and "silly." Besides that, it's not like the request isn't already widely practiced across the internet and it encourages artist expression.

Prize could be the winner's sig thread is stickied for a week (Assuming they had one.)

Involves staff interaction. No go.

I think you're confused. If someone were to submit a signature made by themselves every week, they can't change. I'm not sure if you realize that people make sigs just for fun. We're not talking just about what's in a users sig section. Sorry, if I'm not making sense.

I didn't say they didn't know what Rep was.

You more than implied it.

Not really. Talked about how they don't know what it's for, not that they didn't know what it was.

The prize could be the ability to change your avatar smiley to a custom one and have the time between username changes reduced. But I doubt that'll fly
