View Full Version : Your Worst Airline Experience

What is your worst experience with an Airline?

Mine was on December 27th 2010 when my jetblue flight (307 KIAD-KFLL) was cancelled since A third Flight attendant could not be found. FAA regulation require A320's to have three flight attendants. So we were in the airport for 13 hours, every one was complaining, there were dogs and babies, it was simply horrific!

So we were in the airport for 13 hours, every one was complaining, there were dogs and babies, it was simply horrific!

I'm fairly sure that FAA requirements are:

For aircraft of 20-49 seats one F/A is required
From 50+, for every 50 seats you need an additional F/A

So, if your plane had 151 seats you'd need 3 crew minimum. I flew with UAX in 2007, and our CRJ-200 went MX (had a hard landing and there was a hydraulics leak as a result) so they had to find one before our crew maxed out on their hours. They found a CR7 just in time, but the big delay was finding an extra FA. The CR2 has 50 seats. The CR7 has around 72 or so.

B6 have 150 seats in their A320s so there must've been some problem with hours or whatever.

(I typed ALL that out knowing it was all-Y so assuming around 180 seats, but after remembering they have more pitch so they have 150 seats - pointless rant....) :P

-----

Anyway, my worst flight experience was in 2004. I only typed about it a few hours ago on another board:

We got to the airport, all ready to go.
We go to the check in desk and apparently our tickets did not exist.
We end up on the phone to someone whose accent we can't understand asking why the tickets where not issued.... We where told because the booking was lost. When we asked why the booking was lost, we where told it was because the tickets weren't issued.
We finally got on a flight, ended up with 3 connections instead of 2. When we finally got to our destination, our bags where missing.

EasyJet closed the check in desk after we came one minute late, they didn't let us in and we had to wait 2 days for the next flight.

There was a traffic jam someplace in London so the bus or whatever was late by an hour and a half or something.
There was about 20 people including us all running through the airport to get the the plane and we were like 3 minutes late.
So we had to sleep in the airport overnight. It was scary. T.T

Flying from Osaka to LAX when I was 14 on a JAL (Japan Air) plane. Meaning they add extra seats AND extra rows. I didn't sleep the ENTIRE flight.. 13 hours...and it was a red eye -_-

EDIT: Misread. With an Airline, it was AA losing our seat reservations (which were exit rows) and putting us in the last row of the airplane.

Flying across the Gulf of Mexico from Mexico City to Miami, I had to use the bathroom, just as the plane started hitting some nasty turbulence. I had just started to take a leak when the plane begins bouncing wildly (that was fun!)- so I had to try to carefully sit down on the toilet and hang on. I could hear one of the flight attendants yelling to see if I was ok, and telling me it should be over soon. It was over within like 5 minutes, but man, that was the worst bathroom break I've ever taken in my life! As it is, I hate flying unless it's necessary- though being stuck in a car sucks even more lol. Train travel is my favorite, though I've only been on a train twice :(

I have two:

Missed boarding the flight at Atlanta by a millisecond (seriously, they closed the doors RIGHT as we made the corner), had to sit at the gate all night waiting for a flight with 3 avaliable seats.
Went on a US Airways flight somewhere (don't remember), plane was in shit condition. The tabletops on the back-seat trays had their tops peeling off and there was this disgusting pink glue everywhere.

Ive never really had a definite worst flight
Our bags got lost once
but thats not the worst
my worst is probably also my best
it was my trip to Canada, which is why it was the best since it was surprisingly clear flying over Canada and you could see a fair bit oddly and it was an amazing view
however there was also bad turbulence which meant i could watch the view for long since i was in the centre Aisle.
This is where it got crap, i dont mind turbulence
what i did mind is having to be sat fully upright in my seat, in the early hours of the morning(England time so i was still tired then) feeling knackered from the flight before and then even more knackered from the length of that flight. And why did i have to sit up straight? because if i tilted it by 1 degree the idiot woman behind me would complain.

When we were going to America (which in its self a 14 hour flight is bad enough)
but when we were crossing the Atlantic Ocean there was alot of turbulance
The air masks came down we had to put seatbelts on even the attendents had to go sit down and put their seatbelts on ...
I thought i was going to die that day >.<

lol, we were flying back from a holiday in Cyprus. We'd stopped in Istanbul, and we were about to take off. So the pilot talks in his awesome accent about how we're ready to fly. Then we drive nearly to the end of the runway, and are about to lift off, and the asshole brakes the plane so hard >.< We thought we were going to crash. Some people at the back started crying (adults not children).

Turns out we'd had an air conditioning problem, so we had to get onto another plane.

when i was flying to poland they had a sub plane drive because of the problems with the polish airlines plane, and it was a portuguese plane. the plane was nice and stuff but the pilot wasn't super confident with the way to poland and stuff, so we had turbulence the WHOLE WAY. my sister threw up, and i was sick until i ate some raspberries in poland it was terrible. it didn't help that it was a 9 and a half hour flight, i had to drive for 4 hours in a car to get to my grandmas house. yup worst experience of my life.

And then to make it all worse the fat ass behind me traded seats with a kid using 3 seats so he would be comfortable and the kid kicked my seat throughout the flight while the baby in front of us cried until we landed. Emm that depends on which way you look at it - if we're talking STRICTLY turbulence and no other factors then yeah, no plane (airliner) has affected to such an extent. There have been cases of planes being hit unexpectadly and passengers being injured (a United Airlines A319 comes to mind, as well as two Qantas planes) because of it. There is a very, VERY good reason you

KEEP YOUR SEATBELTS FASTENED AT ALL TIMES WHEN SEATED

Do not learn it the hard way. But 99% of the time, turbulence is harmless. Structurally, planes can take a lot more stress and strain than humans can. Google videos of "aircraft wing stress tests" for an example of what I mean, or "flutter tests".

Planes have been affected by turbulence and other factors, like thunderstorms and wind shear. Delta flight 191 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delta_Air_Lines_Flight_191) was one such incident, as was American flight 1420 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Airlines_Flight_1420). In both cases adverse weather caused the accidents, also causing pilot error.

Either way, these are EXTREMELY isolated cases and you have more chance of being walked in on while on the toilet by the entire cast of Happy Days, The Sound of Music and Glee than you do of being in an aircraft accident :)

I took SouthWest to Orlando and I asked for soda when the attendants came around, and they gave me a plastic shot glass with barely anything in it.

No worst flight for me, just collective crap:

~ They overbooked our flight and we had to stay overnight in a cockroach towers motel in Texas.
~ Sat by a guy that reeked of stale cigarette's and burnt peanut-butter.
~ Sat next to a man who claimed to be a doctor, drank the entire flight, told me how smart I was for finishing a crossword puzzle, then tried to convince me to go to a doctors convention with him in Orlando when the plane landed. I was 11 at the time, and this was a student trip. Creeper is creepy.
~ Our plane got hit by lightning twice going over the Rockies, lost power once for a few seconds, but got power back.
~ My baggage was stolen. I got my suitcase, but it was empty.
~ My mum's baggage had been gotten into, and they stole my Christmas gift from my dying great grandmother (which was a bible with my name put on the front, custom), so somebody out there now has a bible that has my name on it, and I'm the only me in this world xD

Worst flight experience was the way back from Florida. They told us that the plane was having trouble before but they fixed it. Then they said the AC thingy wasn't working so it was bloody hot. When we were in the air, they told us that one of the wheels were stuck. During the flight it was very bumpy because it was stormy outside. Mom and I were freaking out. :3

My worst experience was flying home form Alaska. My dad forgot to put his leatherman in his checked bag and had it taken awa at security ( he had it since he was 13 he is now 54). We got on the aircraft and when the fasten seatbelt sign went off someone stuck their hairy feet between the seat at my right. i had a window seat. i look back and say 'please move your feet!' and he says "ok" half asleep and the falls asleep. Only when we flew through a thunderstorm did he move it.We were about an hour out of pheonix by then.

My worst flight experience was terrible..

I was going on a field trip with one of my classes in school to Hawaii to study Pearl Harbor and the effects of the Pacific Wars and we were scheduled to leave in February of 2010. Well, we got a big storm the night before the plane was supposed to leave, so the trip got postponed until March. You'd think that was bad, but it gets worse..

We were flying out of Newark on a nonstop flight from Jersey to Honolulu, so we get to the airport and get on the plane. It takes off, and a few minutes after that, one of the kids in our group got really sick. So this was going on for a while, and eventually the pilot started making announcements asking if there were any doctors on board. Nobody came forward, so we just kept flying and hoped he would get better. 11 and a half hours later, we were halfway over the pacific ocean. By this time, it's like 1AM EST. So the pilot comes on the speaker and tells us that we're turning around to California. So we turn around, and it takes 2 and a half hours to get to California. And since we went so far, we had to fuel up again. By the time we left Cali, 5 hours have passed since we first turned around. And then it takes about 5 more hours to get from San Francisco to Honolulu. And by now it's like 1AM in Hawaii, which means it was 7AM EST. So, that was day 1..

On the way back we had to stop in Texas for a layover. The flight from Honolulu to Texas was fine, just a bit of turbulence, but that's it. But, the flight from Texas to Newark was terrible. There was so much turbulence. Drinks were flying everywhere, bags were falling from the overhead compartments, it sucked. The flight attendants stood up maybe once, right after we took off. It was terrible.

I don't like flying as it is, I would rather swim to Hawaii than fly. I honestly hate to fly in planes. They just scare me so much. Haha. But that's my story. Sorry it was kinda long.

Women went to sleep and left her four young children run rampage around the airplane, I had to wake her up to get her kid to get away from me and stop kicking my chair.

Overall I can't really complain about flying, I usually fly at least once a year (there and back included of course) and it's never really that bad, I don't even mind US customs anymore, I think the authority they show is pretty funny and kind of cool.

I'm not that person who's always in the air travelling to places, so I haven't been on airplanes a lot. I was to Greece when I was one, so I don't remember anything from that flight.

When I was to Spain (when I was like 5-7 or smt) my ears had complete problems with start and landing. I sat crying and screaming like a bitch. So that's obviously my worst flight.

Thailand at 13 years everything was great, and Poland not even two weeks ago too, so well :D

On our summer vacation last year to Thailand, we had to fly with this weird Asian guy who was eating this absolutely fucking disgusting seafood shit the entire time. I've only been on an airplane four times. Two of those times weren't very pleasing.

My first time flying was pretty exciting for me, I got the window seat. BUT, a little girl was sitting behind me and she kicked the back of me seat the entire trip, even when I asked her nicely to stop. She said, "Okay!..... *kick* :)"

Then another time, the flight was at 6am, so I had been up all night getting my stuff ready until we left at 3am, so I was a little cranky, but I was still excited for the flight since I got the window seat again. But when we got on the plane, there was no window. Not only that, but cold air was being blasted onto me from above and I couldn't get it to turn off. I was cramped, cold, and tired. It was probably my worst airline experience so far.

This wasn't an airplane, it was a train to Belgium but it's very much like a plane in that you can't really get off. (There are only three stops or so on the Eurostar.)

I got seated next to this man, I think he was Russian or something. He had the outside seat so I had to manouever past him every time I needed to use the toilet, so finally on the second trip I made, he yelled out to the entire carriage "My god, you have a small bladder!"

Not a pleasant trip... :(

Where to begin!

I'll just pull them out randomly I guess.

Air Canada - completely DESTROYED my bag, with no compensation. Had to purchase a new 150$ bag to bring my clothes home.

Get home, bag is nowhere to be found. Shows up 3 days later, ripped! MY NEW BAG!

Northwest - BOS - DTW - YYZ. My flight from BOS to DTW was delayed, and after pushing it to 5 hours delayed, it was clear I would miss my connection.

Booked on to AC, and in the proccess, my luggage was lost. Land at YYZ, electrical storm haults us on the ground, sitting in the aircraft for 2 hours for it to pass. My mum, who had driven to the airport to pick me up at midnight, had to go home. After finally getting off the plane, and finding out my baggage was lost, I got the extra security line, for not having checked luggage! FML!! Got home at 5 am, my flight was supposed to leave BOS at 15h00 the day before.

And finally, Air Transat! After a 5 hour delay on the ground at LGW, with the engines running, the pilot figured out over YYR that we didn't have enough fuel to make it to YMX and on to YYZ. Had to make an emergency landing in Goose Bay, refuel, fly on to YMX, and on to YYZ. We arrived 12 hours late, and our baggage was nowhere to be found. No compensation from Transat, and 11 years later, I still don't have my luggage.

I'm sure I can think of some more to follow. These are just off the top of my head

One time i was flying from Cancun, Mexico to Detroit, Michigan. When we got on the plane we realized that they put my brother and i in exit rows. This was a problem because we aren't old enough to sit in exit rows. So the flight attendant had to go around asking people to move. Of course no one would move so she had to offer free drinks and suddenly everyone volunteered. By the time we left the gate it was 20 minutes after we were supposed to take off.

Well I gues my worst would be coming from Barcelona to Newark for a connection, American landed us one hour early, however there were no open gates and the plane at our gate broke down. So we waited and ended up arriving at the gate three hours late. Thats right, we were on a plane for 13 Hours!!!!! Then we had to run through customs and re check our bags and catch our connection which had changed gates. We were the last people on board, but we caused a delay for that plane because my mom was making a scene with the flight attendant, because my mom thought we were on the wrong plane.

I have more, I HATE flying. Did I mention I am 6'5" with really long legs and my dad refuses to let up book business class and so my knees are always jammed up against the person in front of my seat and I have to keep my arms stews he'd down in between my legs so that I am not too wide as to bother the person next to me...

Brisbane To LAX (14.5 hours)... We were on a Qantas 747-400 and I realize that this wasn't the airline's fault but it was my worst airplane ride ever. I sat next to 2 ladies who became very loud and intoxicated. I had 2 drinks spilled on me and 1 was hot coffee. The only way I blame this on the airline is that they just kept giving the passengers more alcohol.

We flew easyjet. To Rome. Bristol airport was shit, and then when we got on the plane my family couldn't all sit together. (5 people.) I had an ear infection, and just when we were flying over France the agony started. That lasted the whole flight, and for two days afterwards I couldn't really hear anything. And the fact that it was easyjet made it a hundred times worse, obviously.

My worst experience would be an Emirates flight from Dubai to Venice. They were using an old and outdated A330 for the flight which had faulty IFE which could only pick up static and maybe one channel, the overhead projecter was only displaying the route map, the purser on the flight was extremely rude to passangers and then they ran out of food options for the people on the flight (not that the food on that flight was particulary good anyway!)

Having only flown with Emirates, I think it is pretty safe to say that the standards of the airline are nowhere near as high as they used to be. I think the problem with them is that they are too inconsistant because you can have a great flight with them but then your connecting flight can be absolutely horrid which was the case for me and just this year they dropped from being ranked 8th in the world down to 10! It is a shame really :(

On a school ski trip a Jet2 return flight from Bergen airport to Newcastle international was delayed because of snow, first for fifteen minutes, then half an hour, then an hour, then three hours, then cancelled altogether. The snow stopped ten minutes after the final decision, and planes began to run again. The entire school group were sat in a cold departures hall with a concrete floor for three hours, before having to check in again for a norwegian.no flight

On a flight to Colorado, I sat in front of the loudest most annoying little kid that was constantly kicking the back of my seat. Not to mention the guy next to me had a severe snoring problem! Then, when I got off the flight and had my luggage, I tripped because some lady with a rolling bag ran past me and I dropped my luggage which opened and spilled everywhere. Not a good time

My family went to Israel, where they are very, very careful about security. On the way back they stopped us and called out security. They opened my Mom's suitcase and took out EVERYTHING. Turns out they thought she had a bomb in there. It actually was a fan. My Mom has bad asthma and Israel can be very hot and humid so she brought one. We almost missed our flight. Back then it was annoying, now it's funny :)

Oh and a few months ago my family went to Florida and back. A few days later my Dad got a letter that said he was investigated (and eventually cleared) for terrorist activity. Because he had matches in his suitcase. -snort-

I remember another one now - so I was flying to the Netherlands with NorthWest in 2006. This was before they had those TV screens on the back of the chairs. So at a time they chose, several small TV screens came down, and started playing a movie in a different language(I think it was French). It was geared towards adults anyways. Otherwise, you could listen to one of their 12 crappy radio stations.
Bah. Boring flight.

And what was so bad about it?

AirFrance, AC died on the ground, and we lost our airspace slip bc of some dumbass who was late to check in. we were 1 hr with no ac in the summer.

American Airlines always seems to have problems...

Went on a weekend trip to the US with my father to buy a few Harley Davidson motorcycles when the recession went on. I was put in an airport cell, and myself and my father were interviewed (and searched) because we had a large amount of cash.
15 hours later, we were released after a severe apology after my father gave the number of the guy who was selling the bikes. The airline upgraded us to first class from business, but the embarrassment and frustration (I lost count of the amount of times I asked myself, are they this stupid?) make this my worst air line experience.

I went on a 2 week trip to visit my family in Texas and my Grandma paid me $100 for mowing her lawn and feeding the horses. So, before getting on the plane, I went to use the payphone because I lost my cell phone. I set my wallet down and forgot to pick it up. I found out when I got back to my house that I left my wallet with $100 dollars in the Austin airport.

Hardly an airline experience though. You were careless, and left your wallet.

I don't have a great experience of flying. well this summer my mom and I went to Prague with Lufthansa. everything was great except our neighbour on the airplane. grumpy German. he sat near the window and came late. he just stood and said NOTHING and just stared at us to make us understand that he wants to get through to his seat. then when we were leaving the airplane he was the 1st to leave (he was ready before we were) and again that grumpy look... he didn't say a word to anyone, even to the stewardesses... I wonder maybe he was dumb? but why did he have so gloomy face all the time?

Hmmmm... been on a lot of flights, here are my worst ranking ones;

#3 - Thomas cook 757-300 Glasgow to Heraklion - I had a seat in witch I could see the front of the engine. As they began to start it the engine spurted out some smoke and ust sat there spinning very slowly, after 20 mins the pilot came over the PA and told us there was some fuel sitting in it and when they tried to ignite the engine it screwed a computer. Only took an hour to fix and the crew were very friendly and relaxed about it all :) Oh one of the engineers was waiting for them to start the engine on stand (so they knew it was working) and he had headphones plugged into the plane so he could speak to the pilot and he was sitting texting whilst waiting :):D:))

#2 - British Airways A320, London Heathrow to Athens not the airlines fault this one, I had got my braces off two weeks before going on the flight and as we were decending the difference is pressure cause my teeth routes go into complete agony.

#1 - Flyglobespan 737-300. Glasgow to Heraklion, He came into land very, very fast. Hit the runway hard, and was slamming onto the brakes so hard he nearly made me hit the seat infront, and I was only wee and 8 at the time :))

It was definitely on a flight back from Paris to Boston with Air France. There was turbulence most of the flight and so the seatbelt signs were on most of the time. I don’t know about anyone else experience, but when the seatbelt signs are on, the FA’s are pretty anal when people getting up (obviously). Most of the passengers (myself included) needed to use the “lavatory” but the FA’s wouldn’t let anyone get up. For the short periods that the seatbelt sign did go off for, it was like a mad rush of people getting up to use the lavatory. Most of the people on the flight were getting air sick. Thank God I made it without vomiting :) I was bored most of the flight though since we had a 747-400 without ptv’s, and Air France was showing some pretty bad movies.

I guess I've been pretty lucky then. EasyJet Jersey to Liverpool flight was an hour late and quite turbulent, but that's nothing out of the ordinary

Malága airport is also a nightmare, not the carrier's fault though. Awfully laid out.

Travelling to New York. Sat at the back of the plane. There was loads of turbulance etc. Two little kids sitting infront of me vomitted their stomachs out. They didnt even have the decency to use the vomit bags. The vomit was 'sloshing' everywhere on the floor. The plane then needed to go over some clouds, so we had quite a sharp incline. All the vomit slowly but surely started to make its way to where i was sitting. The smell was unbearable. The worst part was the gagging sounds that the attendants were making whilst cleaning it up.

So the relacement plane was a 737 which was absoloutly full,no seats left at all. Food was crap and slap-up, cardboard hash brown scrambled pillow stuffing and rubber bacon. drinks service was good. seats dont even go there

Mine would be sitting next to this mom with her husband and her children behind her. They kept on asking her do do stuff and they were saying the stuff right into my ear. Worst 5 hour flight ever!

I've only flown 8 times in my entire life and two of those times was when I was too young to remember. The remaining 6 times were all less than 2 hours and too short for anything eventful to happen.

20 minutes isn't very long at all.
