Let me start out by saying that I'm not the most popular teen at my school, neither am I the least popular, I'm just average like most people. Is it just me, or does it seem like the media usually makes high school out to be the worst years of most people's lives. I however have not experienced that in my three and a half years in high school. I go to a normal public high school without school uniforms just like everyone else. And I was never really picked on or made fun of, nor did I see it happen a lot to other people. Everyone just got along fine, sure we'd have a few fights a year at my suburban high school, but other than that, nothing bad ever happened. Sure, people fought over girls, but that didn't usually escalate into violence, and sometimes girls would criticize each other over stupid stuff.
It doesn't matter what clique or sub-culture you're a part of, or even if you're a part of one at all, everyone intermingles and has friends in each group. And really only three students (out of over 2000) at my high school have been made fun of extensively, one of whom is obsessed with the Byzantine Empire and lets his obsession get in the way of his social life, the other two just act really strange. No one gets made fun of social classes really here. I assume that this is the same at MOST (not all) other high schools.
I don't understand it, in movies and what-not high school is always depicted as a place where teens always get thrown in lockers and beat up for lunch money, but that stuff just never happens here. My dad told me he got made fun of a lot when he went to high school. But I never get made fun of, except the occasional joke like "yeah, because you're such a conceited bastard" or something stupid like that.
I love high school, and sure, the American education system has a few problems, but all things considered, it's the best in the world. In America if you want to succeed, you succeed. If you want to fail and be a high school drop out who works at McDonald's your entire life, you can do that to. That's one of many things that makes America so great. Has high school changed since it used to be in the old days, especially with modern technology, teens just get along better and everything since everyone has a Facebook pretty much and they all get to know each other better than they could before? Or why is it that high school has this false image of negativity around it? So, please share what your high school is/was like, and whether or not you enjoy/enjoyed it?

The media makes anything out to be the worst of everything.

U.S. students' average scores in international comparisons have often been below the average of developed countries. In the OECD's Programme for International Student Assessment 2003, 15 year olds ranked 24th of 38 in mathematics, 19th of 38 in science, 12th of 38 in reading, and 26th of 38 in problem solving. In the 2006 assessment, the U.S. ranked 35th out of 57 in mathematics and 29th out of 57 in science. Reading scores could not be reported due to printing errors in the instructions of the U.S. test booklets. U.S. scores were behind those of most other developed nations. While US teens' performance was mediocre in the Programme for International Student Assessment tests, which emphasizes problem solving, US fourth and eighth graders tested above average on the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study tests, which emphasizes traditional learning.
Ha, no.
But overall, I agree with you, high school isn't as horrible as the media portrays it to be. Maybe they're basing it on what high school was like back when they were teens, in the 60s, 70s and 80s.

Let me guess, you play a lot of sports. You've got a cheerleader girlfriend, and on the honor roll. The worse punishment you've gotten was grounded for a week. You're upperclass, going to one of those 600+ dollar highschools. Am I right or wrong?
Either way, you're niave as fuck if you think America is great, or that highschool isnt so bad. Kids kill themselves because of schools. Kids kill them selves because they see guys like you, who dont see them being hurt. Open your eyes dummy, there's a bigger world out there than you know.

1. You're wrong. I don't play any sports. I'm currently single and my ex was on the jumpstyle team, not cheerleading. I'm not on Honor Roll anymore. I got arrested once. I'm barely middle class and just go to the only high school in my area.
2. America is great. And I've never made fun of or picked on anyone intentionally.

Actually, it does.
Suppose i came into your school. Bisexual FtM with a heavy nerd streak. Don't think that would be accepted with open arms.
You'd probably lump that under "just act really strange", you and your friends.
Guess what.
Class matters. Social standing matters. Money matters. This isn't just MTV bullshit, it's life.
If you don't either have the background(legacy), money, or extreme intelligence, you're screwed, that's how society is set up.
Some of us are in those smaller circles that are so far below your high horse you don't realize we exist. The only way you could possibly say they 'overlap' is the odd bando who happens to be popular because they're actually really nice, or mister-varsity who's in the same position. Or yes, there's the few nerds who are up in who you consider the student body.
And, get your head out of the sand.
America isn't all that great. Our government is trying to raise taxes in an economy that's still falling (despite historically lowering them works better), our schools are either amazing or failing, and too many people are living in poverty for our nation's supposed wealth.

Maybe, but she still made her point.

High School isn't bad...
...Unless your school forced you to sign papers to sign you up for special ed that call you "Emotionally Disturbed", then four minutes later they're forcing you into a mental hospital, but when you leave that hospital they kick you out.
High School isn't bad...
...Until they break their own rules and force you to say the pledge of allegiance.
High School isn't bad...
...Until you're rezoned in your school area three times.
High School isn't bad...
...Unless the school cop at one of your schools was fucking a student.
High School isn't bad...
...Until your teacher starts hitting on you.
High School isn't bad...
...Unless your school had the highest death rate for 'cheese'.
High School isn't bad...
...Until they teach you lies.

There's a hell of a lot of shit going on in high school. A lot of tormenting that goes unseen, even unrealized by the tormentors. Even if it's as simple as not inviting someone somewhere. Snubs can hurt just as getting thrown in a locker.

I'm English and in sixth form, our equivalent of senior high and it really isn't that bad because all the dickheads tend to leave at sixteen, however:
During my compulsory education I was beaten so badly I required hospital treatment by a gang of wankers who laughed the whole time, videoed the attack and actually put it up on YouTube. I have cousins in America and both of them have described similar treatment in a high school in Long Island.
Also, there is definitely a class divide in schools, but I'd say the wealthier don't necessarily have the upper hand. I'm middle class and went to an overwhelmingly working class school, as most are and was beaten precisely because I'm middle class. Maybe it's different across the atlantic but I doubt it. School sucks for loads of people, even me, a middle class teenager with good social standing.

High school isn't that bad for me but my school district, though very good, has its downsides :S

The media does not portray high school to be bad. The high school I go to is really good, so maybe I'm biased to this subject. I have a fine time in high school. And before I get presumed like the OP did. No, I'm not some sport toting, cheerleader dating person whom is extremely popular. I'm average, like the OP. I like high school. Way much more than middle school, even though elementary was the best years of my life. But that's going off on a tangent.

I for one, think high school is amazing.
I'm a freshman.
The football games, the getting in trouble, the making mistakes and learning from them, the hanging with friends, the dating/breakups, the making fun of teachers, the going to mcdonalds because its in walking distance after school. It's awesome to me. Just because you play sports doesn't mean you don't care for other people. I'm a pretty nice guy and I play sports and I'm fairly popular.
The only thing I dislike about high school is that I'm in college prep and I have a ton of homework all the time. But other than that I love it. I guess it just depends on what type of position you're in. No matter what, everyone is going to have there own opinion and they are entitled to that opinion.

high school is great to me. i have friends in all cliques from the really smart kids to the jocks to the computer nerds. why? because i basically belong to all of those groups. i can express myself alot in preparing for future education and a career in my school. weve got around 2800 students, half of them ghetto black, the other half rednecks. theres a small portion in there where neither of the kids are that, and that is where i fall into place. if you dont work at something, then its not going to get any better. you cant just expect the system to have everything good for you, youve gotta work for it. i have lots of friends at this school and ive only been here for a year and a half after i moved in the summer between fresh and soph year. sure there was that period of maybe 4-5 weeks where it was awkward because you didn't know anyone and no one knew you, but hey, you work at it, get socially into it and gain friendship. now there are cliques, i wont say that everyone gets along but its not like just everyone is bitchin and everyone, its pretty peaceful, except for the occasional arrest which is always fun to watch.

I don't think I've learned anything for the mistakes I made in school, because who gives a fuck about getting detentions for skipping class. Obviously if I didn't know about skipping, I wouldn't call it skipping.

I wouldn't know. I've been raised in private schools all my life. I figured that's what public school was like, the way the movies made 'em.

A person's experience in school depends on the type of person they are and their background. Generally my status has been the sporty foreign dude who's gay and i don't have a problem like that. I've always attended schools where there hasn't been much, if any, social class difference. I've enjoyed school but it can be a nightmare for some

But, high school isn't bad. It's the people that's in it, that makes it so unbearable. High school provides education, support and advise on your future. It's the people in it that make school an unhappy place.
The kids that kill themselfs because of high school, it hasnt been proved that high school was the ONLY reason they decided to take their life.
And, why should he/she open their eyes, when your looking at the world in a different point of view and a different perspective?
