What Happened in Guernica on April 26th 1937?
1. Study Sources A and B. How Far do these Two Sources Agree? Explain your Answer Using Details of the Sources. [7]

These two sources don’t agree much. They both agree that Guernica was bombed during the late afternoon and early evening (‘these planes … dropped bomb after bomb’ and ‘the whole town … was slowly and systematically pounded to pieces’).
However, the sources disagree on a number of other issues. Firstly, Source A claims that ’18 planes’ bombed the city, but this contradicts Source B’s claim that there were just ‘three Junkers’.
Secondly, they disagree on the timing of the bombing. Source A suggests that the bombing started at around ‘5 o’clock’ with ‘an hour of bombing’, before the planes left at ‘around 7 o’clock’. Source B, however, claims that the bombing started at ‘4:30pm’ and finished ‘with the approach of dusk at 7:45’.
The sources also disagree as to the bombers’ identities. Source A says simply that they were the ‘enemy’, but Source B claims they were ‘German bombers’. Finally, the sources also contradict each other on the use of incendiary bombs. Source A says that ‘They were dropping incendiary bombs’ whereas the only reference made to fire by Source B is ‘these [farmhouses] burned like candles in the hills.’
2. Study Sources C and D. Does Source D prove Source C to be true? Explain your Answer Using Details of the Sources and your Knowledge. [8]

Source D does not prove Source C to be true.
Firstly, the other sources provide evidence to support both C and D’s claims. Source B supports C’s assertion that it was neither the Nationalists nor the Republicans who were responsible for the bombing of Guernica, as ‘the resources … are lacking to either side’ (‘a single German bomber’). Source F’s caption also supports this (‘assassiné par les avions allemands’). However, Source G supports Source D, in that it was not the Germans who were responsible (’bombing raids, which are chiefly carried out by the Italians’).
Secondly, the reported responsible for Source D was working under strict censorship at the Nationalist’s headquarters. This significantly reduces the source’s reliability, as it is more likely to be one-sided. However, Source C is also somewhat one sided, as it comes from the memoirs of a Nationalist propaganda chief. Furthermore, these memoires were published in the 1960s, still during Franco’s rule, so it is highly unlikely to have blamed the Nationalists for the bombing, even it was their responsibility.
The disagreements between the Sources and their one-sidedness mean that Source D does not prove Source C to be true.

3. Study Source E. Why was this Source Published in 1937? Explain you Answer Using Details of the Source and your Knowledge. [8]

Source E was published in 1937 because it was during that year in which Nationalist forces took control of much of the Basque region of Spain. The source’s author is critical of Franco’s techniques, which were new in 1937. Devastation on such a scale in such a short time had never been seen before in history. This source’s message is a warning to the future of what war will have the capability to do to civilians.
4. Study Sources F and G. Is one of these Sources more Useful than the Other about what Happened in Guernica on April 26th 1937? Explain you Answer using Details of the Sources and your Knowledge. [8]

Source F is marginally more useful than Source G for studying the events in Guernica on April 26th 1937.
Firstly, Source F clearly shows us that the city of Guernica was very heavily bombed, with only shells of the buildings remaining. It also tells us, in no unsure terms, the identity of the ‘murderers’: ‘les avions allemands’. However, we can’t be sure about the claims made in the source, because no evidence in the source, other than the picture is provided. This means that it isn’t hugely useful to a study of events in Guernica. However, other sources on the paper can provide evidence to support the claim made in Source F. Source B says that the bomber was a ‘German bomber’ and Source
Source G, however, has more evidence, but the evidence given isn’t specifically linked to the bombing of Guernica. But the evidence that is given is relatively to useful insofar as ascertaining the identity of Guernica’s bombers. It suggests that Germany may be responsible: ‘Messerschmitt aeroplanes have been tested in the Spanish Civil War’. However, it also suggests that Italy may be responsible: ‘bombing raids, which are chiefly carried out by the Italians’.
Source G was written nearly a year after the bombing of Guernica and has the advantage of hindsight, making it a bit more reliable.
5. Study Source H. Are you Surprised by this Source? Explain your Answer Using Details of the Source and your Knowledge. [7]

I am neither surprised nor unsurprised by this source.
The Nationalist army officers to whom the reporter spoke to, said ‘”But of course we bombed it.”’ This is surprising because I didn’t expect such senior Nationalist officials to openly declare, and rather unashamedly (‘”But of course”’) that they ‘”bombed it and bombed it and bombed it.”’
However, I am not surprised by the actions of the Nationalist press officer, Rosalles. As a press officer working for the Nationalists, it is not surprising that his account of events in Guernica might not be the exact truth and that his ‘explanation’ for the old man’s account us ‘”He’s a red”’.

These sources don’t provide very far convincing evidence that the Republicans set fire to Guernica.
There is only a small quantity of evidence to support the idea that the Republicans were not the blame for the setting fire to of Guernica. Source C and D provide this evidence.
The evidence in Source C couldn’t be more explicit in its pinning the blame for the burning of Guernica on the Republicans; ‘The Republicans … set fire to its buildings’. However, the reliability of this source may be called into question due to the fact that it is from the memoirs of a Nationalist press chief. Furthermore, they were published during the 1960, still during Franco’s rule. This makes it likely that the source is one-sided, thus reducing the level of convincing evidence that it can provide that the Republicans set fire to Guernica. Source D also makes a similar claim that it was the Republicans who set fire to Guernica: ‘the enemy [the Republicans] set fire to Guernica’. However, the use of the word ‘asserted’ creates the impression that this may not, in all actuality, be true. In addition to this, the source was produced by a journalist working under ‘strict censorship’.
